The Best from Brazil - 400G SPS Tank

Carlinhos,

I have read several times how you dislike detritus. I personally feel that accumulation of detritus is what has kept me from seeing any real success in this hobby. Just too much dirt in my system.

Would it be possible for you to show me how much detritus collects in your system before you vacuum it out of your special sump and what it looks like inbetween cleanings?

I always heard you need a little dirt in a system but I am thinking a little means very little.

I have been trying to switch filter socks frequently and blow out rocks daily and vacuum said dirt weekly. My tank looks horrible and always has. I am ready to have something that looks nice.

Detritus is not the issue on it's own, exporting nutrients from the water column is the real problem, via some mechanism, be it mechanical, chemical, or biological, that can remove nutrients fast enough to maintain very low to undetectable levels in the water column.

I understand this. If you read through this entire thread however you will see that Carlinhos has basically designed the entire system so that detritus can be easily removed. He has a custom sump with a ton of baffles that is designed to capture detritus. He also uses siporax in a way that is designed to allow detritus to bypass the filter material instead of trapping it. If allowed to linger it is going to add those nutrients into the water column. Why allow that to happen if it can be easily removed? This seems to be the approach Carlinhos takes and I for one am interested in learning more about what he does and why.

This tank is FAR FAR above the other TOTM nominees that have followed and many that have preceded.

Exactly

Carlinhos,

What's your lighting schedule?. How long do you run full lights per day?.

Thanks
Mo
