Installed the BM160 yesterday

Well - I installed the BM160 external yesterday. Never did this before and decided not to drill sump, so I have the skimmer outside the stand.

I flooded the cup once - not really knowing how the skimmer works, but soon figured it out.

It seems to be working very well. The pump fired up right away, and 4 hours after install, it is skimming! It is skimming wet right now, and am going to leave it that way for a few days while it breaks in.

I have to say - I am pretty impressed with the build quality of these skimmers - very solid.

I do have a question regarding the feed pump. It says to use a maxijet 900 or something that pumps 270 gl/hr or less. I looked all over town, and the only thing I could find pumps 300 gal/hr. I am not sure if the instructions take into account head loss. I used about 8 feet of vinyl tubing to feed the skimmer - so there would be some head loss - but no idea how much? Is the pump I am using ok, or should I special order the maxijet?

You should be fine. A Maxi Jet 1200 (+/-300gph) with 7 feet of hose will run at about 170gph so I would say that you could use even less hose. Now if you used a Mag 3 then you will need to add quite a bit more hose, since they can pump at a much higher head pressure.

Thanks Saltychild

Thanks Saltychild

Thanks for the info. The skimmer is working well - but is still in break-in mode and I was not sure about the feed pump. I can trim the hose - I left it long on purpose because of the size of the feed pump. I'm going to leave it for a couple of weeks and see how it performs once it has broken in.

Thanks Chris!

Thanks Chris!

Thanks for the info Chris. I will say this again - I am very impressed with the build quality of this skimmer. It is very solid.
I do not have a dwyer meter or kilowat thingy to measure - but it is skimming already and am assuming that this will improve as it breaks in. It is already outperforming what I had, as I have both running together for the moment.

I just got my BM150. Its been running about an hour and wow is it way different than my deltec mc500. I will let you guys know how it turns out today or tomorrow.

Well it has already skimmed out some stuff and I am messing around with the water level inside the skimmer. Where are you guys keeping it in relation to the funnel neck and the riser tube. Right now it is about where the red rim is maybe a little higher.

Anybody who is running the bm160 EXTERNALLY have leak problems at all? Just bought one from Chris. Was wondering if there was some sort of lube that maybe can be used in the piping even if its like olive oil to keep water and seepage out.

I am SO disappointed.
Just got my replacement pump from NuOcean for my non functional BM100.
The new pump is not the same footprint and I can not install it in the skimmer body.
The hole cut for the air intake to go through the skimmer body does not line up.
This skimmer has such potential, but now I am wishing I had just ordered the EuroReef I was going to get.
I like saving money as much as the next guy, but at this point my skimmer has been offline for a solid week, and now I have to deal with this AGAIN!

EDIT: I just managed to get the skimmer to go together. I had to REALLY tweak the heck out of the skimmer body and aligning the holes to put the base plate back on was a nightmare, I was really scared I was going to strip something out, but it does appear back together.

BUTthere's more! It's loud as heck now. Making tons of noise. I think it's because it's not really put together the way it is supposed to be because the footprint of the pump is different.
I'm pretty disappointed, I had such high hopes for this skimmer.

dmorel- is yours from Nuocean.com?

Seems the ones he sells doesn't have any of the problems the ebay ones with the 220v pumps have.

It WAS from NuOcean. I think it's that the NON 100's don't have a lot of problems.
I think I just bought the wrong model :(

ya I hate to say it but keep playing with it. Also double check with eric on that pump. If it's loose at all it's going to buzz like hell
