The Bucket/beckett Skimmer

There is a pump called MAK 4, it is a pump with good head pressure, much better suited for a becket then a mag would be.

Here is a diagram of a hartford loop thanks to Snailman

You use the height of the pipe to determine the height of the water in the skimmer instead of a valve. It is very cheap, takes up very little floor space, and is easy to adjust.

thanks for the info ..
but how precise is it??

It is just as precise , and maybe even more so, then as a gate valve IMHO. Definetly more precise then a ball valve could ever be.

With this system you are not restricting the flow the flow at all though the skimmer, so what goes in goes out. With a valve regulating the flow you are depending on having a constant flow into the skimmer.

...and if a piece of crap ever clogs that restricted valve, your skimmate cup will become a skimmate fountain onto your carpet!:O

this is definatly something to consider on the next my DIY project

PS: the skimmer works good ..now I want change that ballvalve and install a gate valve to have a precise tuning

I tried the same thing but with a venturi. Sadly, it didn't pack enough umph for that big old bucket. I have a becket somewhere, I may have to give it a try sometime...

I also created a bucket skimmer, however, i made it using a sedra9000 that was plumbed to be recirculating. However, i am also getting the same burping because of the flat surface from the lid of the bucket. I am looking to see if I can form it through heating to give it a more dome shape!

I will post more pics ...now that the skimmer had the break in time its working great the burping is less
I kept the water below the lid and after a couple of days ...when the foam accumulated under it ,started to go up the raiser..its a dry foam today I'm going to raise the water a bit to get some wettish one,
AGAIN this Skimmer is installed on a bin with 150 LBS of live rocks, this LR have been in the bin for three months now .no fish bioload or other, just the rocks bacteria and some other worms.. and I should say that it is not too bad

By the way which pump do you suggest?
Ocean runner or sedra???

i just bought some foam jets but have no idea how to make the housing around it does anybody have any info fore me i gotta try to build one

How's this for a solution?

Mine doesnt "burp" and the lid is not air tight ( it has a hole for bubble observation ).

Can you put this in english please?

Beckets do suck, alot of air and inject it into the water.

Not the most efficient, but probably the most powerful method of skimming.
