The Continuing Adventures of Tim (Supermantis)

Like I said, Martok was not a central hero, he was a supporting character. He fits the "sarge" persona as well as the "eye-patch" archetype perfectly.

Operation: Blushing Violet has begun in earnest as of this morning.

In an effort to not have to bribe Tim to pose for pictures I am removing much of the zoanthid-covered rockwork and corals to my main tank (after using a triple strength FE treatment of course :| ). My hope is that he will get used to (or be forced into) the open more often. I'm sure he comes out during the day when no one is around, but I want to cultivate that activity while I am home as well now. I miss having the tank on my desk at work. /grumble

this will also allow more room for the macro-algaes and plants to proliferate helping to'remove' nitrate build-up. The main pieces of his fortress of solitude are staying of course. Just the extraneous stuff is being removed.

He was already barking his displeasure this morning. While he hates change on general principles, he does love the smell of FlatwormExit in the morning. ;)

Ahhh, you are correct...forgot about good ole Nick. Ok, a one-eye central super-hero is possible after all (although not the norm...I mean, who reads SHIELD anyways...??? LOL.)

If it weren't for the tank glass being in desperate need of being cleaned and Tim getting embarrassed because I was trying to take pics of him while he was strolling around in a towel (he was being shy, regardless), this could've been a great shot to illustrate how BIG he has gotten over the past few months...

Alright, alright... so he's still only slightly more than 2 inches long, that's double his size when he was placed into my care. :D

I think the above shot of Tim may have been posted before; long, long ago - he still had both eyes. I post it again now because it is the last sighting of Kryptonite (under the ledge, opposite Tim, hanging upside down). The remains I pulled out back in January may well have been Kryptonite's after all...

I've seen Mr. WhyMe lurking about in the zoanthid patches being all secretive (cowardly?).

StrongBad is still doing great. I'm not sure that he and Tim have made an agreement, but I do image it would take some time for even Tim to crack through his stony home.

The wrasse and Tim are getting along famously. He doesn't bother Tim and if he has something that Tim wants he gives it up and runs away before Tim even has to tell him to give it up and run away. ;)

I'm going to propt Tim to become more visually available to me and the camera tomorrow. It's bugging me that he's become shy again.

Maybe it's a self image thing and he's just not happy about his having gotten bigger. Anyone have the number of a good mantis shrink?

:D

Wish I had a photo of this, but it's worth posting without one anyway.

So Friday night I see Tim rearanging/reinforcing his doorway from inside the den. That's the official sign that he has finished molting and will be out and about hunting again in the morning; I had my work cut out for me. What with Tim molting and all (and taking his sweet time about it too, I might add) I had taken a somewhat lax position on cleaning his tank. The diatomes and dinos had been having a party so the filter was ready for a swap and the glass needed cleaning and some macro needed pruning, etc... SO, I get to work, in the morning... ;)

I get up pretty early on the weekends and needed to move a few things to the main-tanks new sump/'fuge (which I still hate) and scrubbed all the glass in Tim's tank, moved the rockwork back into it's proper places (never touching his home-stone) and remove a few empties lying about (I'm going to have to entice Tim into eating that damn whelk) when a little motion catches my eye and I get my first glance at Tim in over a week. He looks huge. His color is good. His third antennae looks more full. He just generally looks in really great shap for the one-eyed sissy that he is. So I'm giving him a good eye-balling at he kind of cocks his head to the side and advances on the glass. His raps go out to the side. His thorax raises up and his antennae all spread out. I see a little caption-bubble appear above him, "You lookin' at me?!"

Alright, so I didn't really see the caption-bubble, but that doesn't change the fact that he was giving me attitude about looking in on 'his' tank. He was threatening me!!!

If it wasn't Tim it may have worked too, but I know he's a sissy... might have to drain his tank for a bit to teach him a lesson...

thats funny, my mantis's favorite food is like whelks, he wont eat nassaruass snails. only hermits, and crabs. great thread by the way

I wish there were more stories about this tale, very good narrative indeed. I can't wait to hear more and maybe catch a few more pics possibly a video too.
I can see it now "Tim: The man to save or to be saved from"
Starring Tim the peacock mantis

Keep it up!

Tim's been hidding this whole past week because he's mad.

I changed the failing filter for a newer (and bigger) model. He hates current. Much easier to keep the tank in order since the water is being cleaned again. Easier to see into the tank as well. That's how I know he's plotting something... his single elongate eye stares out at me from his hide-out which an intense almost tangible malice.

I may have to drain the tank again... he's getting cocky.
