The cost of brooklynella

OK so what I did was to go out to the local PETCO and get a heater and a skimmer. I took the 60 hex offline and installed the new skimmer and heater. I lowered the SG to 1.009 and I think I'll leave it that way. The 60 hex has a LTA in it and a 4" sand bed. I will likely remove the nem if it starts looking bad and put in a flower pot or something. More than likely I will do a large WC tomorrow.
I was considering buying a 30 breeder and putting them in that, but I think I'll hold off for a while while I watch how they respond to this scenario.

BTW traveller7 was right. She chilled out and is now hosting in the nem with the male!!!

Tomorrow is another day.

I know that Ocellaris and Luecokranos are quite different, but my Ocellaris pair went through about a week where they would do little more than lay on the bottom of the tank and breath heavily. Today they're both doing fine and I'm working their salinity back up to 1.026 so that they can be introduced back into the main tank. For me the "take home" message from my ordeal has been two things, one being "Try not to panic." and the other "Don't give up, they're tougher than they look." :)

Your pair certainly still has a chance, and in my opinion what you've been doing is definitely increasing their odds.

Hopefully now that you've got them down to 1.009 you'll start seeing definite improvements over the next couple of days...I certainly did with my Ocellaris pair.

Keep us posted, and best of luck.

Thanks for sharing your experience.

Initially she was laying on her side. A couple of hours later she looked as though nothing was wrong with her and was picking on the male for dominance of the anemone. She still wasn't eating though. Hopefully her condition will continue to improve.

Are you feeding Cyclopeeze (i seem to remember you saying you were)? It took me a couple of days feeding trying to feed them cyclopeeze 3 times a day before they started eating, and for a while that was all they would take.

do you use an u.v. unit on either your qt or main display?
It may help in aiding recovery, you can just rest one on top of a qt tank put the pump in the tank and just pump it up and then back in.

Sorry if you already do this but has worked for me in clearing up ich and my dealer has used it for brook with some success.

good luck.

Thanks guys.
I am feeding cyclops occasionally. Unfortunately in Maryland you need a license to sell products and this is anally inforced. My LFS has submitted an application for this license because the company that makes cyclop-eeze doesn't feel like cutting through all the red tape. Till then, we can't get the good quality stuff unless we go out of state. All we have is the brown nasty crap cycolps that comes in cubes. Alas I digress.
I think I'm gonna get some live brine shrimp today in addition to two 30 breeders.
I haven't run a UV sterilizer in about 9 years. If I did it would only be on the QT. Not a bad idea though. This last incident has most certainly increased my dislike of using medications to treat sick fish. It just seemed to hurt more than help, even if i halfed the dose. I have never had a fish live through a medication regamin.
One thing I will definately do is to hypo my QT for every new arrival. I am VERY impressed with these results.
The female is definately responding to the hypo. As soon as the lights came on this morning she started ripping the male a new one. I had to turn them back off to stop the madness!
To date I have had excellent results with using the fish's natural immunity. Just provide more than enough food, clean water and a vast abundance of hiding places to eliminate stress. Some see it as witchcraft, but I have had a lot of success with fungus like you might see on the fins of a CBB and of course ick. If a fish only has ick I don't even worry about it.
I have now learned the hard way that brook is not a malady that can be left to natural remedy.

www.premiumaquatics.com and others stock cp-eeze for your personal use.

I believe Drs. Foster and Smith also sell cyclopeeze on their site...quite a large package of it, and it should be pretty decent quality.

Oh OK. I bought two 30 breeders with heaters, thermometers and algae magnets. Forgot the friggin brineshrimp.

LOL Seems to be the trend...you remember the expensive stuff, but not the small items you wanted right away :)

I moved the leucs over to a 30 breeder with the water they were in. Tomorrow I will start a formalin regamin based on the advise of a guy named corrie on rareclownfish dot com.
This will consist of a treatment regamin at twice the usual dose. The fish will be moved back and forth between two tanks and the tanks will be rinsed between uses. This guy seems to know his stuff. He touches on all the points I know and have theorized to be true regarding quarrantine and treatments and has used this treatment with several breeding pairs.
He thinks like me but is more experienced.

OK you have my attention. Now ellaborate....

They had all the classic symptoms up until I got the SG to 1.009. Now I can't find a shread of evidence that they're even sick.

All the fish that had the disease and were not hypoed were dead within hours to days. What makes you say they don't have it?

the "two tank" treatment method is good in theory, but in reality it's absurdly stressful on the fish. I think your best bet is to keep them in one of your tanks and continue Hypo. You're seeing improvement with your current treatment, so why change it so drastically?

This is a good point. That's why I'm waiting till tomorrow. It gives me time to reconsider.

there are likely hundreds of bacterial infections that are called brook but are not. I mean it stands to reason that there are more than the five or so fish diseases that are banded around.
hopefully your fish have had a bacterial infection and are through it. I would leave them a good month before moving them again.
