The devil thy name is Xenia

Any help on getting rid of xenia... I've tried cutting it back but now it is in small colonies all over my tank and I am unable to cut them all. Full on tank takeover. :uzi:

It always ends up the same way with Zenia,,I see people at the LFS buying it and I shake my head....Youll regret ever putting it in your tank...no easy fix but hopefully someone will be able to help

Lostinthedark, it is because they cleaned your water so not enough nutrients for them to survive. You can strip too much so that even SPS won't live.

Xenia isn't that bad. You just have to know what you are in for if you decide to place it in your tank :)

I had a mated file fish that loved the stuff...

You need to chip the pieces of rock off that it is attached to. If you just trim it it will grow back quickly. If you don't remove the whole thing, it will return.

Oh it is terrible lol it grows faster than my grass out front.

Yeah, it can get out of control no doubt. I actually agree and understand your comment. I am probably just one of the few who like it so will prune/control as best I can.

I also have a Kenya Tree which I think is a million times worse as you can see in the image below. Kenya tree mess is on the right side. My patch of Xenia is by the Hammer up top left. Actually, I don't even understand that hammer because it looks lighter in color than the ones below. It was a tiny frag that was damage but now grew into this giant ball...oh well.

I'm glad there are posts like this one. I love to save them and send them to others when they say... "I just love how their little hands move and how pretty their color is."

It's a trap, walk away from this coral as fast as you can.

As far as getting rid of them, if there are only a few stalks of xenia, I would buy some reef safe epoxy, cut the stalks carefully and cover the leftover base with epoxy. This is the only way you can get rid of them, short of removing the rock from the tank.

Good luck!

Just use them for nutrient export and keep cutting them back. If you want to cut down on their growth then reduce your nutrients and starve them. Run your skimmer wet and consider an ATS or other nutrient removal solutions.

:lmao: Oh so true about being a trap :hammer:

Manny there is a guy on the LPS forum that needs your assistance on a goni.

And then there's me. I failed to keep xenia alive the first 2 times. Still no idea how I did that.

But I do love some weed corals.
Only the tiny blue glove polyps I'm not willing to put in my tank. Weed coral that spreads by spores? Count me out.

Is xenia susceptible to being stung by say a torch or something?

I have a touch that has a couple xenia colonies getting close to it. I'll keep ya updated.

Hydrogen Peroxide dip will get them, i f you scrub them off with toothbrush.
The bas news is they h202 can kill, if you don't rinse the stuff off and the oxy bubbles encounter a coral. I'd recommend a program of a rock every few days, and turn the 'bad' side down into the sand as you re-set up.
