THE DLO's 180g reefing journal?!?

Thats right! As of 12:30 today (04/29/11) i am a proud owner of a 180g tank.

the timing couldn't have been better! My naso needed a bigger home. After some research (provoked by the suggestion of an RC member) i found that some of the behaviors my naso tang has been displaying indicated that its time for a larger home. In comes the chance of a life time! im not going to say where i found this but it cost me $140, and the best part (at least that how i see it) is that its not drilled meaning no RR overflows tanking up my precious real estate or messing with tank flow!

the change will happen sometime during the second week of may.

I plan on drilling the tank and using the coast to coast style overflow which i like for its efficiency and low profile.

I also have to build or acquire a stand for this bad boy, i would love iron simply because it allows for so much freedom of space unlike wood stands.

For the most part all the equipment used on my current tank will be used on the 180, save for the upgrade in skimmer: a Bubble Magus NAC9 :lol2:

Things that will need improving are:

Flow, this tank is 2 feet longer so ill need to compensate for this.

Sump, this will probably be changed because the one i have now is too cumbersome to work with its 18" tall 12" wide. :thumbdown

Lighting, i have a 48" fixture that will certainly need to be upgraded. not sure if ill do LEDs or stick to MH... we shall see.

at the moment that is all. i'm sure ill find more as the date approaches. Stay tuned. :bounce3:

Congrats! I have a Lumenarc mini 250 watt HQI pendant and electronic ballast if you decide to stay with M/H and just add one.

if yur interested i have 2 gl*******s.com overflows brand new and cheap if you want them. each one is rated for 700gph

lol glass ((((((( nice one dive.

Since I had issac help me with my up grade, I would like to show that ppl can help. I would like to devote my time and energy to helping you up grade your tank.

When you do this in may or june I will be more then glad to help you out.

Thanks guys!

@diverad- thanks if I see that making a coast to coast is going to be too much work, ill certainly take you up on your offer. Pm ma details.

@Anthony27 - thanks buddy. I plan on doing the change in may some time. I have a few things to prepare first. The actual switch will take place on a Sunday. I'll let you know when I'm ready.

@aagresti - sweet! How ever it does have a few deep scratches. If you are ok with that then when its empty we'll work something out.

Congratulations on the new tank! What pieces of new equiptment will you need to get due to the larger volume / longer tank? Which ones will you keep and use? How are you going to do the coast to coast?

Nice Pick up D. Sorry I couldn't help with the move. Your naso will be ecstatic. Give me a heads up when you are ready for the move.

Upgrades are Good, Wish I could help with the Move, But it looks like the club has you covered. Great Find for the Price and the Glass holes are a good option for overflows. They can be done on the outside and give you a totally free of overflows tank.

External overflows are the best!

Just remember you're going to go through salt and RODI membranes quicker!

mo' money, mo' money and mo' money.

I still don't know how you do it.... lolol. I'm struggling with this 46g....

Must be a male jiggalo on the weekends.   ahahahaha

new equipment will be in the water flow department mostly. the skimmer i just purchased will me more than enough to handle the added water volume, and i have 2 mag 9.5s that will handle the returns (for now). At the moment the only piece of equipment i have now that i wont be using is my current skimmer, and of course the 120G thank.

For the Coast to Coast i plan on fallowing this example; LINK. I'm fairly familiar with acrylic so it shouldn't be too hard.

Congrats buddy.

I'll come by to help if you need as well. :)

Congrats Buddy !!!

No problem buddy, we all have responsibilities to take care of! And i certainly will let you know when exactly the move will happen! I cant wait to see him cursing length of the new tank!

Thanks once i saw it i couldn't pass up the chance, im guessing this will hold me down at least till the fall, it all depends on the growth rate of the naso once he's in the new tank. How can the gl******* overflow be place on the outside of the tank? See above link for a visualization of what i would like to do.

The cost of the up keep is going to be alot David, but with hard work I know you will do just fine.

Please inform me when you are going to get ready for the up grade. I have 3 20 gallon bins that you are probly going to need, and a 6 pack of beer as well for when you are done. That is the drink pefered for viewing pleasure when you are done. :)
