The Foam/rock Projects Here Thread

Here is my rockwall transferred everything on 3/1/09
I went over the epoxy I had originally used with Bondo resin and let it cure for 3 weeks

I ran outta aquamend and glue so I will have to get back to some aquascaping when I am off again

Thanks for looking!

JPCollo1, I used fiberglass reson too..now Im questioning it. I can not get my skimmer to calm down, I have it adjusted to its lowest level, and its still oevrflowing the cup with water, not foam, water as the bubbles just pour up. Anyways, wondering if you have any problem with your skimmer?
Does anyone else have skimmer issues with these walls?
Im getting ready to rip my foam wall out, even though it looks nice.

When I used epoxy and it still had a smell and I put it in and the skimmer went crazy, i used Bondo resin with this wall and my skimmer is fine...I did let the wall cure for 3 weeks in the sun tho.

Humm...see this tank has been up for 2 months now, and I cant get the dang skimmer to chill out. It was for a few weeks, then it went bizerk again. Its driving me nuts.

marcelft, is your sump level constant? Some skimmers are very touchy to water levels. I have a BK and it would overflow from time to time. Then i moved it to an area of my sump where the water level is always constant, not affected from evap and its been fine.

Hey Larry,
Thanks for the response. I raised the height of the skimmer up to the recommended level. I have tried different water levels too. Nothing worked. I even borrowed a buddies skimmer to see if it was my skimmer and his did the same thing. The water boils over into the collection cup, filling it with water and bubbling out the lid. The skimmer is a euro reef cs6+2. Anyways I don't want to hijack this thread, just wondering if I wasn't alone. Got2envy makes me think it's not the bondo resin. Im a newbe and I naively bought used live rock, that looks like it was taken out of the intercoastal, might be that.

I would like to see some tanks that have had foam walls in them the longest. I know customcolor has had his in for 2 years can anyone out there beat that?

OK so whats the best foam product to use to make diy rock? the yellow (i think called great stuff) or the black pond stuff? whats the benefits one over the other?

i like the black cuz if you do cover it with an epoxy/sand mixture but miss a spot it will not break down. mine is uncovered and still holding up very well. so good infact i did it in 2 other tanks too :)

Well, customcolor, based on the response to my last post it seems that you are the only 2+ year foam wall verteran.

tdkarl: I wouldn't bother using great foam unless you snag up the pond and landscape. The juice just ain't worth the squeeze, know what I mean? Use something for ponds there are a few different products but the Touch n Foam is the cheapest. Check out acehardwareoutlet.com

do you still have to epoxy the touch and foam? I guess no matter what you have to if you want to cover it with crushed coral/sand mixture, correct? Thats that the sand/coral stick to is the wet epoxy, correct?

Any idea on how much of the epoxy you need to cover a certain area? If it's going to run me another $100 I may just do without. It will all be covered with algae eventually anyways and if it's covered with algae, coraline I hope, I think that would be a pretty good UV barrier. Plus if you use the pond foam, which I am, I think it will be fine.

zack, how are you going to get your sand to stick? Sprinkle when the foam is still wet? I bought 2 packages of epoxy from Hobbytown the other day, was about $12 a piece. I think I should have enought to get it all done. Just assembled my eggcrate tonight.

Honestly I have quite abit of rock on there so on the small areas of foam I do have I was just going to sprinkle it on. I may even let it dry with nothing on it and see how that looks. You think two sets will do it on my 120 or will I need 3. I really have no idea how much they will cover but we will see what happens. I am still waiting on my foam. I saved some cash on the foam but they don't seem to be in too big of a hurry to send it.

I started a build thread but had a few hiccups in productivity and decided to just take a bunch of pictures and put it together once I get more of a head start. I'm building an in-wall setup and I have documented everything from when I pulled the first nail tearing down the wall.

started assembling my egg crate last night in my new 110 also. Thought about starting a thread. One questions or maybe two.
1. I cant fit my entire background in my tank in one piece. so I am doing it in two, now I know someone suggest doing a puzzle piece type of thing so the seperation isn't as noticeable. Any tricks on separating the two pieces once you spray it, or do you spray it as two different pieces?
2. When you spray it, what did you lay the egg crate on? This toach and foam adheres to stuff so I wasn't sure what would peal away from the back of the egg crate easily.

Here is a pic of my egg crate structure so far. It will be two pieces split right down the middle.

zack - I cant be sure the epoxy will cover it all. I tend to do a little overkill.

tdkarl - I had a similar issue. My 75 has the cross brace at the top of the tank, so I couldnt get it in. I had a piece of plexiglass I was going to use in the middle, perpendicular and the the two pieces "pinching" it. After assembly in the tank I planned on spraying another small "connecting" bead and mold it to the adjoining pieces.

Originally, I made a form with laminated particle board I was using as a base for the eggcrate and rock. Not using it though because of the above issue.

Also, how are you securing your wall? Are you using a bunch of rock? I ended up siliconing a bunch of spots before I foamed. It is in there tight anyway so I doubt I will have issues.

tdkarl: Lay the egg crate on parchment paper from your grocery store. The foam won't stick to it and it will leave a nice "molded" look on the back side. I bought a giant roll just for this project.

I wouldn't be too concerned about cutting it into complicated pieces to help it mesh and disguise any joints. After a few months no one will notice any joints anyways. Seems like added complication to something that no one really knows how to do in the first place. Of course this is coming from a guy that may not even put sand on it in the first place.

As far as securing the wall, I intended to use silicone to achieve this. I just bought a tube last week I intend to dedicate to this purpose. Not quite sure how I will do it but I'll make sure to document it and share with everyone.
