The Foam/rock Projects Here Thread

I should have started a build thread because I have so many pictures of my foam/rock wall project, but I didnt, so I wanted to post some pics of the project in here...

The tank is a 230 Gallon (96x28x30) Acrylic Half Cylinder that I purchased used and reconditioned.

Enjoy!

Wall and sand is finally in!

Hey everyone I have 7 cans of touch and foam landscape I got in the mail yesterday if anyone wants to buy them. Shoot me a PM. the only place I found them at a good price was acehardwareoutlet and the shipping is nightmareishly SLOW!!!! Took them almost 2 and a half weeks to ship it to me. I can put these in the mail tomorrow if someone wants to buy them.

What kind of foam did you use "great stuff" and did you epoxy it? Looks good.

Here are my latest pics, just put the sand in last night so its a little cloudy. Plus I am not very good with a camera. Click the red house above for my detailed build thread.

I read on a post you can use Gorilla Glue (polyurethane based) instead of epoxy to adhere sand/cc to the foam. Any ideas or opinions on this?

Pillars look awesome by the way!!!

I used Touch'n'Foam + MAX ACR 2 part expoy resin.

The pilars are nice! Very nice job!

I am getting ready to add a split double arch in mine, more pics soon!

I wouldnt use it... But that is simply because the epoxy resin I used worked so well and was cheap enough that trying to cut cost in such a critical area just wasnt worth it.

The bottom line to "is it safe" comes down to if the product is completly inert after curing. Beyond that, the only other concern would be if it is UV sensitive.

I used a product called MAX ACR, which stands for "Aquarium Construction Resin". It is a low viscosity 2 part expoy resin that is sold in 1 1/2 gallon lots (or more if desired). I used maybe half of it, and I think I paid close to $100 shipped. My biggest concern was that it was fish & invert safe. This stuff is used in large public aquariums :)

Im not sure if polyurethane is safe, as I have never done any research on it, but I will say that while during my research I did find a bunch of posts where people used fiberglass resin (polyester based) and it seemed like there were a few reports of problems, but perhaps this was related to other issues. I would think that fiberglass resin (polyester based resin) would be safe to use as it has been used to construct many ponds and aquarium ornaments, but I do know that it does take much longer for it to completely cure (up to 30 days).

Also, one thing that I beleive is worth noting is that the MAX ACR 2 part expoy is almost completly oderless! This is a HUGE plus if you are forced to working indoors (such as I was as this project took place during the cold winter months of the mid-west). Fiberglass resin, if you have ever worked on cars or boats, I am sure you will know, is VERY toxic as it vent's.

Hope that helps!

Well I have been running my foam/rock setup about 3 or 4 weeks now. One thing I have noticed is my skimmer seems to be working overtime on this setup. The ammount of skimmate the skimmer produces on this system is ALOT! At lease 2-3 gallons a day. I am using a aquaC EV-120 skimmer with a rio2100 pump. I know aqua c skimmers are very sensitive to aditives. I can't help but wonder is the foam or epoxy is effecting the performance of the skimmer.Everything was good dry and set before I put the background in the tank, but with this much skimmate I can't help but wonder if something is leaching into the tank. All my readings are 0 or low so I am just not sure why the skimmer just can't seem to level out. I spoke with aqua c about it and everything I have done to get the skimmer adjusted doesnt seem to make the skimmate less.

I've used Guerilla glue for frags on occasion, so I feel pretty safe in saying that it is reef safe. I would worry about it possibly reacting with the foam in a way and causing problems. I just finished reading this thread from start to finish (3 hours) but has answered all my questions about using foam in my new build. I am planning to set up (eventually) a 72g bowfront as my frag tank, but would like it to be "display worthy" as well, as it a.) may end up as my short term display when I move and b.) will almost certainly be sitting next to my main tank, and therefore need to look nice and c.) I'm just anal like that. :) This is going to be a slow build, but I figured I'd chime in and document my progress as well.

A big consideration will be that this will primarily be a frag tank, so I need integrated frag racks. I'm thinking about creating "troughs" where I have room for the racks, and filling them with sand. Not sure how natural this would look, but I'm kinda open to anything right now. The other thing is that I will have a substantial overhang on the top where my SPS rack will be situated. . After reading through here, I'm definitely going the pond foam route with things, maybe with some DIY rock with concrete to help weigh it down, and contribute to the custom needs of my tank. Time isn't an issue for me, so the cure time of the concrete isn't a concern at all.

Thats the epoxy that I used but I wouldn't reccomend using Beckett's Pond Foam since it costs nearly 3 time as much as Touch n' Foam Landscape and Pond.

I wouldn't even bother with the Epoxy. It's kind of pricey for one and you won't even notice the difference in a year or maybe even less. Algae will cover all the foam and it will look the same as rock covered with epoxy and sand.

Is this the finishing resin that ya'll have been using with the Beckett's Pond Foam?

i used beckett's with NO epoxy and its doing great (2 years now) i recomend becketts cuz well......its ben tested for 2 years now :) touch n foam is a newer foam being used now.....ill use it if some one will have it in there tank 2 years from now...sorry guys

WOW these are all really amazing tanks! There is so much inspiration with in these pictures I could look at them for hours.

How long does it take a foam wall to cure?
OR, better yet, does it need curing?

I ended up building one and I'm starting to smell some kind of weird paint smell coming from the fish tank....
Did I do something wrong or, is this completely normal?
