The Foam/rock Projects Here Thread

Thanks, I had a great time making it and will probably eventually do one for my 125 gallon. If you like puzzles or enjoyed putting together models as a kid then this is for you, figuring out how to arrange the rock/coral is really fun. The ridge in the center is a tunnel made out of the egg crate and the top rock is resting on it. My chromis can fit in the tunnel, the clown can not.

i know z-poxy has become the best choice for the epoxy covering but what i am wondering is the people that have used fiberglass resin like the bondo brand or the elmers one tha i posted earlier have seen any ill affects.

yousmellfishy i know you said you didnt have any problems after 7 months with bondo brand but can anyone else chime in on this???

the 2part resin i got is from lowes and its elmers brand it seems to me that its just like bondo brand but the name is different but im still nervous on using it and would love some input from you epoxy/resin guys if you think it will be ok.

thanks a lot in advance.

or i found Loctite 2 part epoxy and it says its water proof. heres some info about it from the home depot site any thoughts on this epoxy????

This epoxy is a water-resistant, permanent two component adhesive for use on projects that require the highest bonding strength. This product is resistant to solvents, moisture and impact. It can be used on most common materials such as wood, metal, glass etc. This product is sandable and paintable. The product comes with a convenient dual syringe that allows precise mixture of resin and hardener. The epoxy starts to develop its superior strength after 5 minutes.

Can be used on most common materials
Begins to develop its superior strength after only 5 minutes
Bonded objects can be moved after 20 minutes
Full cure in 24 hours
Comes with convenient dual syringeâ€"allows for a precise 1:1 mixture of resin and hardener
Resistant to water, solvents, moisture, and impact
Permanent bond

I can't speak to long-term effect, mine is covered in bondo, soaked it in RO water for a month or so and has been in a live tank for another month or so...everything is good at this point...

I dont think its necessary to coat the foam if your using a pond foam since it's supposedly UV resistant. If your using non-pond foam than I would use the epoxy. Plus, if you do use the epoxy its easy to get the sand to stick to the foam.

Here is the foam wall I just finished. Not sure I like it that well but it is heavy and I drilled out the rocks to hold frags. Now to see how it fits in the tank

alright well i looked it up and it does have styrene and so does the bondo brand resin. so i decided im going to go with the loctite 5min epoxy it doesnt have styrene.

I'm going to be updating tonight with some new progress. I haven't been doing much lately as it's not a priority.

so im guessing that Z-poxy finishing resin is mostly used to glue the sand onto the foam.

OshKosh what did you use???

I made a wall for my 100g. I used about 50lbs of base rock, made "shleves" out of them so I could place corals on them, I think with corals it will fill in nicely....I made the opening for my overflow box a litttle too big, Im thinking Im going to fill it in more.

After: sections

<a href="http://s193.photobucket.com/albums/z189/hotwired99/Rockwork/?action=view&current=standbuild172.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z189/hotwired99/Rockwork/standbuild172.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Now just to let it cure and get it wet. This epoxy paint takes forever to dry.

hotwired99 what the brand name for the epoxy that you used to glue the sand to the foam...
