one more question as it looks like i'm going to have to order it online. How much, on average, am i going to need for my 75g if i just want to do the back glass?

I have 75 and I used about 6 or 7, but I used alot of rock. I also.did both sides as well as back glass. If you are going to use alot of rock, and just use the foam to bond the rock and fill in the gaps, I think I would order 6 and have some left over. On the other hand, if you are going sparse on the rock and mostly using foam I would order more. The extra can be used to make other larger structures made from smaller other rocks. Also you will want some shop towels and goof off or some other solvent to clean up any mess. You may get away with less, but calculate in some learnig curve.

I don't think this will help you because i live in southern california but I have 20 cans of great stuff pond foam available new. Also 2 boxes of z Poxy I had to cancel a project I was going to do for a friend.

Finally, have photo of rock wall that consists of mostly rock and less foam. For a cube, I think you get the most of the display tank space by having a rock wall. As mentioned, a pvc return and a pvc drain are hidden behind the rock wall.

I decided to make a wall for my 37 today and used two cans.
I added some rubble and salt to make details with the first one.
The second was higher up and foam only and I tried something different. I removed the tube and sprayed the foam on the eggcrate like spray paint from a foot away. It made some interesting details.

Yeah I know. Whenever I am doing this kind of stuff I think, grab a picture etc., and then twenty minutes has passed.
I finished the clean up with a dremel to remove all eggcrate from the front view and blasted everything with the hose to remove the foam dust and salt.
I needed 1/4 more of a can to finish everything but figure the CA etc. will give it that non-man made look in 6 months.
I will get a photo of my "handy" work and post.

I read in other post not to use fiber glass resin, I used it 4 years ago when I did my first build and everything is doing fine. The only reason I bring this up, is that I've seen commercial coral propagation tanks that are made from fiber glass. Please help me understand so I can finish building my next tank.

Some big commercial tanks are made from FRP the structures are then color tint gel coated or finished with resin. But you need to finish-coat the fiber glass, I would not recommend Polyester or vinyl ester resin, for the finish coat.

If your experienced with gel coat? (Gel Coats are basically colored laminating resin), but it's application is not as easy as one my think, you could use epoxy resin for the finish coat.
What will the tank be constructed of, materials used and what are the dimensions?

FYI: You can buy Laguna black pond foam with UV protection on eBay for less than $ 10.00 per can. Laguna makes really good products at great price's and just alittle more info.....Laguna (Max Flow series only) pond pumps use the same motor as ATB (Flow Master) aquarium pumps.

After reading the above post I was under the impression your building a propagation tank or a tank, as in from scratch, and not foam rock for a tank, if that's the case?:uzi: my post.
If rock use pond foam, if you like finish coat with epoxy resin.
I think 3 cans of foam would be able to keep Bruce the Shark out of the water.
I misjudged the ballast weight needed and I will have to attach some rock to the bottom to keep it down.
I know I could attach it to the wall but I want to be able to take it out when I want.
Once saturated will the foam wall become weighted down or is this something I will have to deal with for the time it is in?

So I have decided it's time to re-aquqscape my tank after countless attempts to utilize all of my real rock and not end up with a fruit stand, or the old the pile o' rock look, that I never really liked, more like hate and I'm not a big fan of the rock wall look nether, sorry I know it's popular.
However I do like the bonsai tree look, and it's "˜simplicity' and view from all three sides. My task of making a foam rock bonsai inspired aquascape was not so simple, for me at lest, some of the problems I encountered was my 50 g tall acrylic tank has two small openings at the top 13"Lx7"D good old euro bracing.
How was I going to make my foam rock bonsai 20"Lx12"Dx16" H that took some thinking out side the box literally, because I didn't want to try and build it inside the tank with the small openings and dealing with the pond foam getting on the acrylic and all the mess, you know "˜simplicity' besides my tanks up and running.
My rockwork will consists of 6 major pieces, the body and flat branching arms, all four sides. so far I just ruff finished the body, what I did was make a plywood box 13"Lx7"Dx 16"H and made the sides removable so I can get the bugger out after it dried and packed full of salt. The arms will be made separate and epoxy on after the body is finished and in the tank. As for now I'm waiting on Lowes getting in more coarse salt, the only place on island that has it. Hopefully in a week or so? I'll post some more pic's then

Here's my latest project. Up and running now for 7 months. It's a 55 gallon connected to a 40 gallon breeder.
