The Foam/rock Projects Here Thread

Silicone does not adhere to acrylic as we as it does to glass. I don't think silicone is the way to go if you're dealing with acrylic.

i have been spending the last couple of weeks researching this and i have a 185 acrylic tank i am going to be doing, would it be easier for me to silicone the eggcrate to the walls, then rock scape it, then pond foam and will it stay put to the walls doing it this way

also do i need to scuff the walls to get a better bite with the foam

sorry for the dumb questions but i am new to the acrylic seen

Pond foam sticks to anything!! And that can be a good thing. If you arent too concerned about having to remove the rock wall later for whatever reason, might as well spray globs of foam on the corners on the back of your tank and let them cure for a day. That eggcrate wont move. But you should lift the eggcrate about a 1/4 inch so you can get the zip ties on.

I used pvc pegs from retail display shelves so I can remove the rock wall when I sell the tank someday.

Good luck.

I have about 85 lbs on the back wall alone with 2 more walls to go besides the main scaping that needs to be done
these pics are takin with the tank on its back

but I am debating on leaving the foam alone and letting it coral line up on its own or using resin and sand to give it a rock texture
any ideas guys and gals

now to let it sit and dry for 24 hrs and then figure if I want to cut the foam back or leave it alone.......... :-\

No question take the effort to cover it with sand. I too debated this but I wanted that immediate satisfaction of the wall looking real right away and not have to wait months to cover up the black foam which, let's face it, doesn't look very natural.
I was ultra diligent with multiple coats of resin/sand that you wouldn't be able to tell it's fake.
Looking good!!

What type of resin is everyone using

Two part epoxy resin.

I used a low viscosity, ultraviolet-resistant epoxy. Aluzine epoxy resin system. The low viscosity makes it easer to brush on and flow into small pits and crevasses and a little go's a long way, I chose not to use sand and the aluzine dry's "˜water clear' not amber like some hardware store brands do.

Just want to offer something for anyone seeking a safe epoxy for projects. I used Pond Shield epoxy. Non-toxic and made for use with fish. Also it comes in tan so it is working well with my rock wall covering the black pond foam.

what about foam? This thread is years old so wondering if the people that used foam would recommend it? I’m having major problems with my aquascape. My Tonga piece is super heavy so I’m using acrylic rods. But need something else to help stabilize. I have epoxy but foam would be great.
Does foam last in a reef tank?

Is anybody still active on this thread I would love to know how everyone's tanks are holding up and I have a couple of newbie questions

Rock wall right before I took the tank down at 2 years old.

Afterthe tank was a year old I started having issues with coral death. They would just not thrive then die. Especially zoanthids. Not sure if it was the rock wall or not. I have downsized to a smaller tank without a rock wall and the corals from the 65 are doing great now.
