The Frogfish Files

So after 8 months or so, my frogfish died. He (or she) was really one of my favorite fish ever. So fun to watch him hunt his food ( he never did catch on to frozen) was always incredible and it was amazing to watch him turn colors and even grow some false algae on him. I know 8 months is a decent amount of time for one of these guys, but it still made me sad, especially because I dont think he was of-age yet considering his size. Here are some of the most recent photos I took of him.

Sorry to hear about that. It always sux loosing a fish, but it seems that these little guys really make a connection with you. They are so fun to watch, and probably one of the more memorable fish that you'll ever own.

Just a question for everyone...How long do Wartskin Anglers usually live? I've had mine almost 1.5 years, and the LFS that I bought it from said they had them for a little while. The guy was actually sad that he gave me a price! He didn't think that i was really going to buy it, and he said that he wouldn't have sold it if he didn't already give me a price on it. Just a pic in case i'm wrong on Wartskin

Froggies @ Shedd!

Froggies @ Shedd!

Hey all, I went to the Shedd Aquarium at Chicago yesterday, and guess what I found... TWO frogfish!! They are both in a tank together with a big scorpionfish ( I think that's what it is ). Their tank is connected by clear acrylic to another tank with lots of small yummy looking fish. It is in the Wild Reef exhibit.

The orange looked to be about seven inches long, and the black one is bigger, probably nine inches. I wouldn't venture to try to ID them, all the experience I have with frogfish is reading this thread ;). The plaque said they are "Warty Frogfish." I couldn't see the lures on these guys, if they even had them. The orange guy swam around a lot, peeking at the lil fishies next door. But the black one moved maybe a foot during the 30 minutes I was watching them.

The pictures I put up here are the best ones that show the fish. I also have a movie of the orange guy swimming around, but dunno how to upload it, can we upload movies on RC?. I have a bunch of other pictures of these two, as well as the other reef fish I saw, in my gallery.

Yes. Not the best nutritionally though. If you can feed the ghost shrimp a good pellet first or something to gut load em that will help. They are fine if you want something live to give em, but training them on to frozen is the best way to go.

yeah i just want to get hime eating first then over to frozen. thanks . ill gut load em with mysis

great picture!!

THNX! I do love that little guy, but it makes it pretty hard to find other tankmates for a 54gal that will help keep the tank clean. I've been thinking about trading it in, but can never bring myself to do it. If i can ever get my sump built, i might put him in the fuge area. Anyone else tried this before?

Lets resurrect this thread!
I just setup a 29 biocube for an angler. I have read this entire thread including the splits and feel that I am ready. I have a 29 gallon Biocube, 150 watt HQI MH over it (some sps going in), (2) 530 gph powerheads, approx 40 lbs of cured live rock (in tank and sump), 1.5" puka shell gravel, and a Tunze nano skimmer going. The tank is cycled and the parameters are stable and within normal limits. I am adding Seachem Stability daily to be sure. There are shady areas and lower flow areas available. There will be no clean up crew. The temp is steady at 78-79 degrees even with the lights on.
I ordered a Antennarius Striatus that will be here tomarrow from Divers Den and am excited.
My LFS has an employee that I have trusted for years that has kept anglers for years and has great advice that matchs the advice given here. They also carry live ghost shrimp. I plan on getting this fish onto frozen seafood asap if possible. Have I done eveything ok getting ready for this fish or does anybody have any suggestions?

Did you start your 29gal with water/rocks/substrate from the 250? If you didn't, and just used all new for this setup, I wouldn't feel that it would be stable enough for an Angler just yet. If you did, then i'd say that you'd be all good to go. Can I ask why no clean up crew? It's fine to have hermits and snails in the tank with them, just no shell-less crabs or shrimp of any kind. They will quickly become lunch! If your LFS has live ghost shrimp, you would be best starting your feeding with these. Try to get them to eat some mysis shrimp or Cylopeeze before feeding them to your Angler. That way, the Angler will get the nutrition from the Mysis or Cylopeeze. It may not take frozen food right away, so don't get discouraged. Mine used to eat frozen all the time, but then refused anything but live food for about 6 months. Just the other night I got it to eat a Silverside that was soaked in Vitamins! YAY!!!! Even if you get yours eating frozen, I find it to be a nice treat to drop a few live things in there for it to eat every once in a while. Good luck, and keep us posted on here. Maybe we can get this thread going again. That would be pretty nice!

The live rock was all cured except for around 11 lbs that was clean marco rock. It all came from an established tank. I have read of anglers eating snails and hermits and my lfs friend confirms that hers eats them so I figured, why bother? This angler is already 4.5" long so it probably will go after snails and hermits.
I figured I would get a dozen or so ghost shrimp and keep them in a small container with a powerhead while I feed them Rod's food, cyclopeeze and whatever I have on hand including some Selcon to get them ready to be dinner. I guess I will feed 1-2 shrimp every 3-4 days dependinging on their size and still drop a live fish in every so often to keep "Darwin's" hunting skills up.

Sounds like you've done your homework on these little beauties! I don't think you'll have any problems as far as it sounds with the fish. I'm glad that you have a plan that is so well established, as these fish will make it a little bit of a pain if you plan to keep corals with them. My Angler is a Wartskin, which grows to a max of 4", so maybe because of the size, my type doesn't eat hermits or snails. It is just over 3" now, but I have seen it eat two clowns that were at least 3.5" long!

I was suprised to hear that some of them eat snails and hermits. My friend at the lfs said hers will consume an invert, the flesh will dissolve and the fish will end up spitting out an empty shell some time later. I guess I could try it with a snail or hermit but I am a little nervous about taking the chance since these fish sound like they will eat anything that moves whether they are hungry or not. I am pretty sure she said that the one she has currently is a wartskin as well.
I actually glued down a few frags onto the lower areas of the tank where I think the angler will walk around. I added a few ricordea and zoas to tart covering the bare liverock. In time, I will add some sps to the upper areas that have higher light and flow. I have a ton of softies in the main tank so it's no biggie if they are trampled by Darwin.

They won't really bother the corals other than making them retract somewhat, but not being able to have a clean up crew, or algae eating fish will make it hard to keep the algae out of your SPS, and from smothering your softies and LPS. I've had a mixed reef for about 6 years and an angler in it for almost 2. It sucks not being able to have a few smaller algae eating fish in my tank, but hopefully you will find a solution that will work for you.

Haven't been on RC lately, but I thought I post some video that I re-did recently of a pair of A. dorehensis spawning. The pair produced a total of 5 egg rafts.

I'm also including some new video of the larval development.

Some of you have seen the low resolution version of the courtship and spawning video.

These 3 are all higher resolution and downloadable from RapidShare(free).

I couldnt get the rapid share server to download your files. I got a message that it was busy.
I also see that to download and view a file, I need to pay euros or wait a couple minutes to download and view each movie if I dont pay?
