The Great T5 Reflector Glarathon

I am going to guess (that is what you want?):

The halides are putting out 20% less than the T5's?

You pic looks dark, bt could just be exposure settings.

With the 20kk hqi, I bet they are lower. No wait! They gotta be higher! No. Maybe lower. Oh heck. What is it?

i believe it.. considering i have been told that t5s put out more PAR than many (well all but the best) 175 mh lights...

i can certainly say my 117 watts of t5 are way brighter than a 38G with a 150 mh on it....

IMO, my 6 T5's (all aquablues) with the normal triad ballasts LOOKS brighter to the eye than a single 400mh. Now I know that can't be, right? LOL, no drugs or booze induced, but it does. Man, all aquablues is blinding.

The GE 6500 has more PAR than the Aquablues so naaaaaaahhhhhhh. Of course your tank will look like someone poured lemonaide in it if you run all GE's.

I am going to throw some 10K in the halide fixture before returning to the light side. I figure I'll see how much more par the 10's put out. Supposed to be about double. If I swap the actinics out for T5 Blueplus or maybe T6 actinics(look very nice) I'll be ahead of the game.

I am your fahhther, Luuuke, cross over to the dark side and join me.

Incredible thread!!

I wonder why it hasn't got the attention of the halide police?

Anyway, it just proves that my lights were the best solution for my tank and my canopy.

I'd love to see the PAR ratings of the T5s (SLS, SLR, X) and MH (150s, 175s) side by side in a chart at different depths upto 24". I know you can't do all of that, but thanks soooooo much for doing this much. Its great!!

One thing to keep in mind is a cheap PAR meter is no solution for a good spectrometer(learning more about this crap than Iever thought I need to just to have a fancy fish tank). Fluorescent lamps have a more spikey output than halides. Having an equal amount of PAR the halides would likely provide a better quality of light to the corals, closer to natural lighting. If I can't at least match the PAR using the halides the T5 are going back on.

I would love to see one of the guys with all the expensive equipment do some real world tests instead of all these steralized lab type experiments. Do the measurments with an established tank with rock in it.

I think I am going with BIV 10K lamps. Don't know who they are but Sanjay's testing shows them with a better output than AB's.

I'll pop the PAR readings when I get the lamps.

BLV is a large industrial lighting company. They either own or something like that in relationship to Ushio and they definitely make Ushio's cores. They probably make AB and Giesemann's bulbs.

Ushio bought BLV. According to Ushio, the BLV name is slowly being replaced by the Ushio name in Germany. Yes, they are basically the same bulbs.

On Sanjay's website you can compare 2 lamps spectral output and I wouldn't be suprised if Guiseman(sp?) Ice Cap and BLV were all the same lamp.
