Took him a day to start hosting and I'm kind of kicking myself for not getting two. There were 3 in the holding tank and the other two were small, one certainly seemed like the 3rd wheel. It might not be too late...

The anemone is puffed out more than usual and the colors aren't showing up as nice as usual, but I'm happy the two of them seem to be hitting it off. This clown came in as a True Percula  and it's clearly not that. I think I know what it is but I'd like someone to confirm or deny my suspicions first. So what do you guys think he is?

TIA,
Peter

juvi saddleback or black and white false perc?

I'm sure it's not a B&W Ocellaris. A. polymnus is certainly possible (and likely) but they have such variable coloration I'm just not positive which is why I didn't want to proclaim him/her as such.

These are black variant of A. polymnus. The brown variant have incomplete saddle and cap on their heads.

we have a female that looks like that she is a black and white saddleback, they have either black or yellow fins. or i think that they turn black once they mature. she is about 4 to 5 in long and needs a boyfriend :) we love her but cant find a male so we might sell her so she can have a boyfriend. thay way you can have two. i dont know how to send her to you but its a nice thought. if you know how we can get her to you let me know. They are A. polymnus. Black Saddleback clowns. These fish are known in the fish trade as black and white percula clowns(people are ignorant). There is no such thing as a black and white percula clown. Only Ocellaris clowns. Very nice clowns though. I have brown saddlebacks. Very awesome.

Just be careful with that nice carpet. Those clowns (a. polmnus) are known to be very rough on their anenome hosts. Almost to the point of killing them.

Audrey, thanks for the offer but the carpet is still fairly small and I've deceided I'm just going to be happy with a single clown since I don't want the temptation of trying to raise babies.

Aquareeferman, I thought the invoice was just a typo on the importers part... Maybe they always label them as Perculas and reserve the Saddleback label for the brown variant. Either way it's silly, but so are a lot of other labels importers put on things.

bl, yeah, he's a frisky little bugger but I think I'll be ok. The carpet has been in captivity for well over a year and is growing at an alarming rate now that it's in my care. Yesterday it looked larger and healthier than it ever has, so I think as long as the anemone continues to grow as the clown gets bigger they'll live a long happy life together. Your suggestion is another reason I plan to only stick with the one clown.

A pair of clown is alway more fun to watch IMO. Certainly more natural and show lots more interaction and natural behavior.

Well, I went to a Pet Supplies Plus store today that I really can't stand. I only stopped because it's on my way to another LFS. They had a lone Saddle Clown there being picked on by a Maroon that was unmarked. I ended up getting him for the price of a Clarkii -25%. I expected the two of them to battle for a but but hoped they would get along after a day or two. There wasn't even the tiniest bit of aggression and the little guy was seriously thinking about diving into the anemone after being in the tank for a few minutes.

I think it may be love at first sight ;) (sorry for the poor photo)

I always get nervous when people add clowns without QT...especially from a store you don't trust. I hope the new guy wasn't carrying any bugs with him :)

I love the black A. Polymnus...they're gorgeous, and not something you see a lot of.

That is quarantine :)

What kind of lighting is optimal for carpet anemones?

MH or a good amount of T5s with good bulbs and individual reflectors. My Carpet is under a 250w HQI Geismann Megachrome Coral.

Sad news BTW, the new clown is MIA. It either jumped or the anemone made a snack out of him. :(

that is sad...I hope he turns up somewhere.

I was thrown off by the rocks and anemone in the QT...hehe, my mistake.

Well, it's really my prop tank, but I use it as quarantine for new fish. If there ends up being a problem then I have a tank I can treat disease in. I don't believe in treating unless there is something to treat :)
