The "How to go Barebottom thread."

ok i need to ask some questions...i have been following this thread for awhile and now have gotten to the point of cooking my rock.....

1. do i cook the rock with a heater and powerhead? i am doing the powerhead for o2, but do i need the heater?

2. i have an 8x2x2 200 gallon tank, i currently have 2 6100's, and my mag 12 as a return. i am going to add more flow, but do i add 1 6200...............or do i buy a 6000, and 6100 from my friend?

3. i have a asm g3 skimmer in my sump....should i add another skimmer? i do not think i can go bigger because of space under sump.

4. should i get an ozone generator?

sorry about all the questions.....just want to do it right.:D

1. A heater may benefit if the tub is going to get really cold.

2. I would increase my return pump over anything.

3. That is a good skimmer so long as it is powere by the appropriate pump.

4. Yes, that or UV or both.

hth,
Sean

i think i am at the max my tank can drain....if i put a bigger return pump on it i would have to slow it down to compinsate for the drains.

i have a center over flow with 2 1 inch drains, and 2 3/4 inch returns...i think

Here is my take on it..

1. Yes. Bacteria will do the job faster when the water is heated.

2. Flow is pointless unless you have a solid export method. Flow for the sake of flow is just blowing dirty water all over your corals.

3. I was very very very unhappy with the g3 on my 120 BB. IMO the skimmer can't or has a very hard time processing the water free of particles.

4. I would say a properly sized UV as long as you have a skimmer that is able handle the effects of the UV.

Take what I say with a grain of salt, I don't have a ton of "real world" experience. I only know what I've read.

I do not have any type of fuge. Unless is was in the salon Noschwag does not either. I know Bomber did not like the idea either. That being said I am going to install a remote sand bed. Why? Because I did not cook all my rock, and I have more nutrients in my system than I should. I'll use the sand bed to reduce No3 in the short term and disconnect it when the system has stabilized at 0.

Steve, once the NO3 reaches zero, with the sandbed in place, it will most likely rise again when you remove the bed. That's like removing part of a filter..

One comment on the use of ozone during cooking, if you have uncured rock with a significant ammonia spike, the use of ozone will cause a much higher nitrate spike from nitrite oxidation during the cooking phase then without ozone. I was cooking my rocks in two identical tubs with identical pumps and skimmers but only one had ozone. I wonder if anyone else has similiar experiance. Sean or Bomber care to comment? Or is my experiance likely more due to differences in the individual rocks?

Steve,
Forget the sandbed, just siphon every other day.
Sean

I think I found the magic bullet, thanks to Schwagy.

A lot of what you see is calcium precipitate from my auto topoff adventure, but the filter sock is still collecting alot of gunk that was ending up in my sump. Now I can change this daily rather than vacuum the sump everyday!
