The "How to go Barebottom thread."

8 weeks until BB for me. I have a couple of questions:

I have a DSB in my 100g sump w/250-300lb of LR - I intend on keeping this rock in my sump after I cook it. I have 150lb LR in my display. I am cooking 200lb LR right now. Should I totally break down the sump and display at the same time and run the sump w/o rock until the rest of it is cooked? Should I time it so I take out all of the old rock and add all of the cooked rock to the display, then add all of the old rock back to the sump in a couple of months after it has cooked? Will all of this rock in the sump help or is it useless?

I am running 300+ Cerith and 150+ Astrea in a 280 its not as much as you would think. They really make a difference in maintaince. The other guy who is really cleaning up is the Chevron tang. Great bottom cleaner!

panic-

I would add some hefty flow to your sump since that will be the place where detrius will likely settle (on all of that freshly cooked rock). Personally I wouldn't keep LR in a sump just for that fact, that way you can completely break down your entire sump and clean it very easily without having to worry about storing the live rock.

Would the life on the rock aid in filtration if I could figure out a way to keep all the detrius suspended?

In my 120, I was thinking of adding 200 Ceriths.

I have about 40 Turbos in there now, but I need to beef up.

Would that be enough or should I get more turbos?

I went to Keys Criiters...

So what are the Lg. white ceriths? Does anyone know how much bigger than regular ceriths they are?

It would but the rock in your display system would do the same job too.

I guess instead of us all asking is there or that good... Maybe someone can provide a formula for X tank size you need Y and Z...

X = # of gal (display tank)
Y = # of Turbo/Astrea Snails
Z = # of Cerith Snails

Does anyone know if it's possible to get a single starboard piece in a 120 AGA megaflow? I'd rather not have a seam in the middle.

Thanks

Thanks

Order a custom peice from CuttingBoardCompany.com

It'll cost you quite a bit more ($65-70), I just used 2 18x24 peices and cut them down and you can't see the seams since they are both flat edges that but up.

With restarting my tank after a lengthy rock cooking - no livestock at first, when should I add my clean-up crew?

I'm going to be trying this in a few days. I have a piece of starboard sized for a 120, I just need to make the cutouts for the two megaflows. Once that is done I will try to fit it in the tank. I will let you know how it goes.

Buys, get a piece of cardboard and cut it down to the size Starboard you need.
Then see if you can work in it.
Remember that Starboard isn't that flexible too when trying it.

hi seant thanks for all of your work you have put forth in explaining how to work with bb aquariums.
I'm looking to start a new 120 gallon reef aquarium and was wondering how i would start.

What i mean is i will be purchasing live rock online and would be curing it in the aquarium... but are the refugiums bare?

Would you consider using a 6inch deep sand bed refugium for where the critters will stay ? and a bare bottom display?

What is your take on that? i mean with the live rock i hate to have all of the pods etc die...

In your bare bottom aquariums do you just have a fuge with some chaeto in it? and a return closed loop?

thanks guys for all of your work in addition to the threads.

Aaron.
