The "How to go Barebottom thread."

Bear in mind I am taking my information from Dr. Shimek who stated that the minimum depth should be 4".

sorry 1 inch, I am used to typing centimetres., 1 foot would have been an impressive shallow sand bed, and a bugger to remove.:o

Okay... I'm committed to going BB in my 36g corner. This is a brand new set up... never seen water.

I plan on purchasing fully cured LR from one of the LFS. Is "cooking" the LR necessary? Can I add the LR and plug and play?

I'm running 2 x K3's and a Tunze Nano 6025... add that to my return and HOB refugium and I'll have over 70x flow.

I'm running a Bermuda 3C, HOB AquaFuge w/ 5" of sand (act like a RDSB) & chaeto.

Any thoughts on my plans and set up?

Personally,
I would NEVER add rock to an exisitng tank with livestock without making sure it is fully cured and no cycle, harming my tanks inhabitants, looms on the horizon.

To answer your first question, "I" would definitely "cook" it to remove the stored phophates within the rock.

I understand that this method is not for everyone, but I challenge you to find a hobbyist who has done this who regrets it. :)

Is it acceptable to have a DSB in my seagrass fuge and keep the display BB; or is this defeating the purpose of BB?

ALL methods are completely acceptable. :)

I truly mean that, and as long as your tank is running fine then there is no pressing need to change anything.

Hey guys, I have a 20g BB tank with build-in refugium. Recently, my cheato is not growing and it's dying (brownlish color)... I am thinking about taking them out and add a 5w uv sterilizer in there with current DSB. What do you guys think of this?

If the chaeto is not growing a possible cause is that you have achieved a low nutrient state.

I would remove all put a small amount and see how it is effected.

Well, I have been in the process of removing the sand. There are still small pockets here and there, and I keep adding to that by blowing the $*%t off of the rock.
One thing that I noticed so far is that my orp had stayed >390, where as before I had my AC2 trying to maintain 350-360, to do this, the ozonizer was on much of the time, keeping me busy baking beads frequently.

SeanT,

What do you personally feel about a DSB in the refugium of a BB display tank?

I have a AquaFuge2 that I am uncertain if I want to do a 5" sand bed w/ chaeto or some rubble w/ chaeto.

I have a very, very good skimmer on my 36g corner (Bermuda 3C).
So I don't know if I need a DSB... maybe the rubble would provide more safe spots for pods???

When starting a new tank wich would be better. Cooked rock from an existing tank?Or cooked fresh rock from lfs? Or is it the same difference?
Thanks

I would say not a lot of difference. From existig tank would cost you less.

That's why I am interested. I just wanted to make sure that there was no other difference.

My concern is how would you know the lfs "cooke" the rock?

Cured maybe but "cooked"?

SeanT,

I feel that until you get into the regular habit of siphoning the detritus out of the main tank on a regular basis, it isn't that bad of an idea.

But once you notice your macros starting to receede then I would take it off line as it isn't necessary.

I will cook it either way. So my question is more which would be more desirable to start with?

If you are going to "cook" it then use the one with the most desirable sizes and shapes.
Those being equal, go by price. :)
