The Life Reef Skimmer Club

Jeff has plenty skimmers ready, no waiting. I just joined the club with a svs 3-36, after a long informative conversation. Only wait is for sumps. Reef on!

Ya, you are right. His website is showing most stuff in stock.

Its been said many times but once more wont hurt.
Jeff is tops.

still enjoying every post in this thread. Theres a wealth of info here.

I'm not really sure how you guys will respond to this question, but don't these skimmers make more noise than most? I am reading about some skimmers that are very quiet or silent. Are these kind of noisy?

They are almost dead silent. The air intake is plumbed into the collection cup and with the lid on it silences the air intake which is the loudest part of a skimmer. After that your water outlet is next but that can be silenced on any skimmer as well. Then is your pump... I can barely hear my mag12.

yeah this thread has prolly save me a bundle, because i was about to make a big "fehler" LOL. for those that do, No i dont speark German, just thought that since it was about to buy a German.... nevermind. Long live the Venturi skimmer!

I've had my tank running for a couple of months and I've never had that dark brown skimmate that everyone has in the pics. It's usually just a sand color kinda thick paste. The only thing I have in the tank is an eel right now. Do I just not have enough things producing waste?

I have the 36 inch skimmer.

here is what my 24 inch with a DC6000 pump on full blast is producing:

I'm tempted to grab a DC9000 and see what that does.

You definitely do not have the bio load to produce a lot of skimmate.

Not a big bioload but are you really getting a thick paste?
My skim is dark but it's very wet. The only paste is in the neck.
You might want to adjust yours to skim wetter.
Long term, wetter is better.

Why is that better long term?

I went back and read a fair amount of this thread last night. I also spent some time on his website. Strongly considering one of these for my 120g build (which is slowly - very slowly - progressing).

Looks like the SVS2-24 would be the one, as I would like an in sump unit. One question is whether I should upgrade to the Mag12.

Wet skimming pulls out more nutrients over the long haul.
Ya, it's wetter and more diluted per cup, but over time you are pulling out more than dry skimming.

How do I adjust it? The only adjustment is the water height right? Do I just keep the water level at the neck?
If it is somewhat dialed in already slowly adjust the water height. Give it a small turn.. barely any movement if using the stock sch40 gate valve. Do not adjust it again for at least 12 hours. Let the skimmer settle between adjustments and then adjust again.

As stated in the previous post, make a small adjustment and wait.
Your tank and your sump water level will determine where you end up. Everyone's will differ slightly.

Also, every tanks water chemistry is different which affects the waters elasticity. which in turn affects your optimal skimmer water height. So people can only give you a base starting height and you need to adjust accordingly from there.

I am building a 120g display with a 40g breeder sump. Looks like the SVS2-24 would be the one, as I would like an in sump unit.

Any thoughts on whether I should upgrade to the Mag12? One down side would be the extra power consumption. Would that upgrade make sense for my set up?

You should consider the 30 inch if you can fit it, minor cost difference. I wouldn't run anything less than mag12 on a 24. I've had great performance increase since I switched.
