Very nice!! Is that fella from DD or just Liveaquaria? I'm sorely tempted to try one... but I'm not sure how he'd do in my reef =/

He's just a regular LA specimen - $60. He's eating brine, mysis, blackworms, Rod's, nori. I plan on trying him in my 150 gal mixed reef. So we'll see how it goes. :uhoh2:

Funny thing that my MI did the other day. I added some SPS frags after pretty much leaving my tank alone for about a year, and the little inquisitive $h!t started pecking at the new frags even though he's been living in a tank full of SPS for almost 1 1/2 years!!!

Hahaha... luckily, it was short-lived, and he now could care less about the frags, but I was amazed how curious he was. None of my other fish even took a second look at the new frags.

Just wanted to share...

Chad

Very nice! That one is such a baby. I forget what they look like when small.

Nice! How big is that one? I'd say mine is almost 4 inches. When do they start to turn into adults?

So nice to see that the thread I started almost 8 years ago is still going strong! I had no idea! All these posts are great and the Idols you have look great! So glad that all the great info in this thread is helping people keep this really great fish. I miss having one terribly...

I haven't had another Moorish Idol since I accidentally killed mine (and everything else in my 300+ gallon system) back in 06. I had my Idol for over a year and I have no doubt he would still be alive today if I hadn't made that terrible mistake. I spent the next 7 years managing a fish store and promptly lost interest in having an aquarium (ironic I know). Last year, the owner of the store went bankrupt and I decided to start my own aquarium service business.

In the last year I have rediscovered my love for this hobby (mainly because I don't have to deal with the retail end of it anymore which is life sapping). I have a new aquarium (a 30 gallon reef) and I am planning a massive 400 gallon system where I plan on keeping another Moorish Idol. I am excited!

I will have to say that my experience with keeping my Moorish Idol was a great one. They are a wonderful, strong fish once they are adjusted to your aquarium. Mine was the LAST fish to die when I had my die off. It was heartbreaking but it also showed me just how tough they can be once they are properly acclimated to an aquarium. The trick is to get them eating early and then get them eating pellet food (mine was a total pig for Spectrum Thera +A). Once they are eating pellets they will eat ANYTHING, including your corals. Mine ate so many of my corals in fact that I ended up getting him his own 150 gallon tank where he lived until his untimely death. That's how much he meant to me.

Anyway, I've rambled enough. I will be following this thread closely and will post my results once I finally get my Idol, hopefully in the next year or so. Keep up the great info in the thread and good luck with your Idols!

Hi again..

my MI is still very healthy and loves Nori and Salad.
He is like addicted.

ChipChip, your Idol looks great! Your tank reminds me of the reef tank I had 8 years ago when I had my Idol. Is that a Red Margin Fairy Wrasse behind him? I had one just like him too! Hope your Idol does well!

Looks great HumbleFish! Keep him eating! And try pellets soaked in Selcon and Garlic. That's what got mine eating back in the day.

zfunk007, I brought an Idol back from near death because of this thread and the advice to use NLS pellets so thank you for starting it! Problem is he doesn't want to eat anything BUT pellets. Shows no interest in anything floating in the water column.

Here's that post...

Wow! You really did bring your Idol back from the brink! I can't believe how bad he looked in that first picture and how great he looks now. Bravo!

Also glad the NLS pellets helped. Odd that that's all he's eating. Mine took just about anything once I got him started on those pellets. I did supplement his diet with live sponge though. I live in Florida so live sponge is easy to come by if your a diver. May not be as easy in your area but he did love sponge also.

I wouldn't worry too much though because NLS is good food with a lot of nutritional value and I have kept fish alive for years only feeding them that. A Regal Angel being one of them.

Hi
yes, my Idol does very well. He is eating and eating I think he could eat the whole day long. No, above the Idol is a Scotts Fairy Wrasse and on the left a tomini tang.

I got one a month ago, friend caught it.So minimal transport stress.Have noticed it feeding on the algea on sandbed.Look strange at first.
Just seeing if any other idols do the same.

They do eat algae from the water column and substrate and the streamers grow much faster with algae in their diet.

Agreed. Also, the healthiest MI's I've seen have always been in outdoor shark ponds at public aquariums. They were constantly eating the algae off the sides, even off the astroturf looking material.
