The Moorish Idol Thread

I have also been told this by many others but I was curious about others who have tried it and tank sizes involved when trying. MrTuskfish is kinda like Snorvich (and a few others on here)... Way more knowledgable and have way more experience than I do ( have been keeping saltwater for 17 yrs now) so I could only hope to be as successful as either of the two mentioned above. Hedgedrew has 3 like I mentioned but that's in a 900g and he is currently upgrading tanks from his 900g to over 30,000g total so obviously he isn't the norm

Yeah, well I am convinced enough by what I have seen coupled with what I have heard that one is all I want to try. I considered getting another to go with the one I have but ultimately decided against it. Besides, getting one to live a long time is hard enough, why tempt fate? I am ecstatic that mine has lasted (so far) over 5 years.

I tried two myself in a light bio load 220g they did well for appx a month then one night they snapped and started viciously fighting I separated them and they are now both Doing very well eating nori. And frozen mysis the only bad thing is one is in my 75g sump .. Such a shame to keep a beautiful fish hidden.. They are both appx "]

Going to bump this, as there is at least 2 new reefers with moorish idols, plus it would be great to see updates.
Mine has a bad left fin (still was the most aggresssive of the idols and ate the most). But swims around well. Just need to get it to eat. 1st day took none of the many varieties of frozen that I have. Next stop is nori on a clip and hopefully I can find the purple kind as mentioned on this thread.

Mine is doing well also..he started eating a day or so after i posted that he stopped. Has not stopped since. I buy Nori from a Chinese grocery store and he goes nuts over it. The only thing is i had an ich or velvet outbreak a couple of weeks ago and i pulled everyone out of the DT now for treatment. My MI did have the spots on him but it did not effect him at all and did not stop eating. I will be starting CP treatment on all my fish tonight.

Yes, mine had at least two minor ich episodes (treated with copper), but it never seemed to bother him, though I lost other fish to it. My Idol has been remarkably hardy and has outlasted quite a few "tougher" fish.

My MI hasn't eaten any frozen yet, although it's eating NLS Thera + and New Era Marine Pellets without issue. It's also starting to mix it up with the other fishes and eating pellets out of the water column alongside the other fishes (not in an aggressive way, just not being timid).

So far I've tried frozen mysis, fish roe from the supermarket, and Rod's Food without luck. Ordered some algae that's been mentioned and awaiting the delivery of it. I also put in some algae grazer discs for my tang and it's starting to investigate it.

If it is eating pellets, you should be fine. That is pretty much all I ever feed mine.

Could you state the exact pellets you use to feed the MI. There seems to be a lot of different new life spectrum pellets, at least there are different packaging.

Also could you describe the flow in your tank as well as the type of salt and salinity. Your idol seems to be the oldest that is on record (from post date) and would love to experience the same.

New Life Spectrum Marine Fish formula. Lately I have been mixing that and Formula 2 pellets together. However, if I get new fish or just because, now and then I might add frozen or nori or other things to its diet. But the main food it gets is plain old pellets.

Salt, I usually use instant ocean.

Flow, I have a mag 18 that does the main circulation, an MP10 on one end wall, a Koralia 40 and an maxijet 120 on the other end wall.

I am a relatively lazy tank owner. I don't do a lot of water changes, I clean the glass and feed the fish 2X a day. But I have been keeping marine fish for 40 years, and I watch my fish closely. I can tell when they are not acting right pretty quickly. I wish I could tell you what has been the secret of keeping this fish, but I can't. I don't feed sponge or anything else that people say you must do with an Idol. It has survived tank issues when other fish haven't. It may just be that I got an exceptional specimen. I can tell you that Nori definitely helps the streamer fin grow, especially if algae is in short supply in the tank. I can also tell you that you need to feed very often when the fish is young or new, as it does not seem to be able to hold much food.

i just ordered 3 moorish idols and a pyramid butterfly. One of the moorish idol didn't make it through shipping. so now I am left with two. praying they will make it through the tank transfers method, then go into a 50 quarantine while my main display goes fallow for 70 days.

Ok this is the moorish idol man,

You are very patient I can't don't have the same discipline. My friends are doing it but 72 days is mighty long time to be fallow.
