The Moorish Idol Thread

I believe I have written this several times in this thread before, but will repeat it again.

I mostly feed NLS pellets, and I also mix in Formula II pellets in the larger size, mostly for my angels. The Idol tends to not eat the larger size, so it is mostly living on NLS pellets. Nori supplement or natural growing algae will help the pennant grow, so sometimes I will feed Nori but not always. Usually when i see the pennant stop growing or getting short I know it needs more greens in its diet. I will also occasionally add frozen food, but not always, and sometimes not for long periods of time. Rods food has always helped when the idol occasionally goes on a hunger strike. However, NLS is what it always gets, every day and aside from the greens issue I think that NLS supplies what the Idol needs nutritionally very well.

I believe that feeding often is important. I feed twice a day now, but when it was younger I fed more often. I also way overfeed, which allows pellets to sit around all day and the Idol can pick all day long. They need to eat all day long because they have a limited short term capacity for food in my experience. However, those with reef tanks are probably not going to want to overfeed the way that I do. Of course, if you have a reef tank, the Idol is probably not for you anyway as it will eat corals. My Idol wiped out every zoa I had.

I currently have mine with 2 adult emp angels, a Naso tang, a Powder Blue tang and a blue damsel and he does fine. But I have had a French Angel in the past that ate all the food quickly and the Idol would not have any to pick on all day and the Idol got very thin. Got rid of the French and the Idol fattened back up. Also had an Asfur at one time that would be aggressive to the Idol and I got rid of it. So tank mates are very important to the Idols health as well.

To echo some of Pinnatus' statements, I also feed my MI nls pellets and toss in nori or an algae disc everyday, with daily lrs or rods food. I've read the same thing he mentioned, which is idols don't have the ability to store food.

Also....my MI has eaten acans, birdsnest and a gold torch (***? Thought torches weren't palatable). So, I've accepted I can't have those. Once in a while I'll toss in a bunch of cheap acans for it to munch on though.

Just reading this thread now. I have a nice MI in QT that is eating lots of mysis and NLS pellets, even the Ich Shield variety.
Sourced from Vanuatu, apparently net caught. Doing well, hope I can keep it doing well.
It will be going into my SPS reef, some euphylia, and a few clams. I'm hoping those are safe(ish).

Good luck!

Seems like you are off to a good start.

Feed often.

I'm feeding abut 6 times per day, watching WQ and changing when required. I'm thinking I won't treat for anything unless I see something to treat for, unless there is something about MI I'm yet aware of.
I had a previous fish that was in captivity for about 18 months, but a recent family emergency had me abandon my tank for a few weeks with pumps turned very low and I think low O2 levels killed it. Going to pay more attention to O2 with this guy.

In my tank, the Moorish Idol takes precedence. If another fish becomes annoying to the Idol, i will re-home it. If the Idol begins to get skinny, I will remove more aggressive feeding fish. I have had to remove several fish over the years for these reasons.

My Idol has now reached the 6 year mark. :)

The only competition, potentially, would be a yellow tang. It will go elsewhere if it gets out of line :)
So far in QT, he's holding his won against the rabid anthias :)

For future reference, are moors okay with small fish? As in, really small fish- the tiny gobies and such. They seem to have tiny mouths.

The smallest fish I have had with mine is a small Royal Gramma. However, I do not think that small fishes would be a problem. Idols have small mouths, and I do not think they eat fish.

But Idols do need a large tank in my opinion. Small fish tend to disappear in a large tank.

MI is similar to tangs taxonomically. Therefore, I see my MI being aggressive with other tangs and wrasse being normal. Even though they don't have a blade on them, mine bites other fish. During feeding, he bites a 10" vlimingi, who appears to be unaffected at all. He also bites the tail of a 6" marine betta. None of the wrasse like fish I put in there was tolerated by him, not even a cleaner wrasse.

My MI is very docile. Have never seen him try to go after anything. Not anywhere near the aggressiveness of a tang.
