The Moorish Idol Thread

Update: MI turned pale and blotchy, almost marbled, while being treated with CP. Removal of the CP has got him turned back around and happy again. Not sure what I'm going to do with him, inclined to add him to the DT. No signs of anything on him..

Thought I'd update, this guy didn't make it. Neither did the 5 Anthias in the QT with him. Probably user error this time :(

So I had an impulse purchase of a MI because it was eating at my LFS. I have the specimen in a 40b for QT and continues to eat with aggression like I saw at my LFS. Admitting this was an impulse purchase and not doing a lot of research, will these fish pick at sps? I know clams and LPS are iffy.

Hey Mike,

I had one in my last tank (before breaking it down)... as long as you keep it well fed, it shouldn't bother SPS (or at least mine didn't bother mine). The only items I noticed it pick at were corals that were stressed out (newly introduced/dipped corals that were sliming). So I would just be careful with new coral purchases.

Good luck bro'!

Mine likes zoas, but it took 4 months of being a perfect angel (no pun intended) before it discovered it liked zoas. Then it ate them all. It didn't fool with sps. Your mileage may vary.

Short video of my tank, with the now 6 year old Moorish Idol. Note I am fish-only now, but started the Idol in a mixed coral tank.

Thanks Chad. What and how often did you feed?
BTW - nice to see you still around.

Thanks Mike... living vicariously through RC for now. Hopefully will be able to set up my tank again when we move and my kids aren't getting up at god-awful times of the night consistently.

As for the MI, I think the key is frequency and quality over total quantity... I had my autofeeder drop Formula 1 & 2 pellets in twice a day (once at about noon, and once in the late afternoon), and then I fed some frozen mixture once or twice a day (I actually made my own- chopped scallops, chopped shrimp, clams, brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, nori, angel formula food with sponge, with a little bit of diced garlic rather than the concentrated stuff that I know is hard on their livers). This seemed to get him the nutrients he needed since he grew pretty large and had good (but not unhealthy) girth, and didn't bother any of my corals (SPS, clams, LPS, zoas) with the exception of some new additions that were sliming (but even that subsided after a day or so).

Good luck Mike!

Mine lives almost entirely on NLS pellets. I also mix in some Formula 2 pellets also, but my angels eat most of them. Sometimes I will give Nori, which I have found helps with pennant growth.

When mine was younger, it needed a lot of feedings. Now that it is older, it gets by on 2 feedings per day, but i overfeed so that there are a lot of pellets on the bottom and it can pick on them throughout the day. I agree feeding often is key. Also, don't let other fish out compete the Idol for food. I have removed fish that ate so much there was nothing left for the Idol.

Here's a picture of mine on QT
