The Moorish Idol Thread

Glad to hear that pontiac. The best shot at getting these guys to eat, IMO, is what you have done. Place them in a calm QT. If it is eating flakes, then you should be set:)

Here are the pics as promised...

Hi all
on tuesday i went to my LFS to pickup supply for my tank in one of there tank i saw him or her?? MI with about 8 Nazo tangs the fish look thin to me so i ask can i see him eat? so he feed them mysis shrimp the tangs went nut but the MI show no interest... however looking closely it was following one tang around the tank like a puppy???? so i talk to the owner and we made a deal i pick up both for a good price. Tues/Wed i kept the light off (less stress) on them. Thurs i tried feeding frozen mysis and live brim shrimp no luck... Fri try spectrumax pellets and aquadine pellets still no luck but in notice that the Nazo and MI pick on the rock so a add some dried seaweed tang start eatting but MI just a taste was not interested......... Sat my and the Miss went to the supermarket to shop i pick up one claw to see if i can get him to eat got home i open one side of the claw put the claw on the sand bed out of nowhere THE FISH WENT NUTS!!! :eek1: here a pic of him and some of his clean up crew i guess im going shoping tomorrow

Glad to see everyone's MI doing well!:) You gotta love the beer guts. They love nori when they become accustom to feeding off a clip.

well my still pick on algae but don't seem interest....
l'm using ocean nutrition brown with garlic added and green julian sprung's{two little fishes}. My tang's love the stuff l'm hoping it rub off on him but he sure love clam's !!! l just gutload one with a little of new life spectrumax finicky formula{pellets} and marinade it with kent garlic xtreme... Boy am i hunger  !!

If they don't eat the nori on a clip, rubberband it to a piece of live rock, so they can graze on it. Much more natural that way. I never used clips...always rubberband it and used long tongs to remove and replace it in the tank.

Incidentally, for Nori, buy it in the Asian food section at Ralph's Grocery, or Kroger probably, instead of that overpriced pet store stuff.

Down here in So Cal, you can get 10 sheets of Dried Oni Nori at Ralph's for $1.99. Same stuff they sell to wrap sushi in. The tangs, angels, rabbitfish, and Moorish Idol would eat that stuff up like crazy as soon as I put it in the tank. Save some money, and still feed them well. :)

Good luck.

Here is my representation of hawaii
The MIs eat flake, frozen, nori.. you name it. They eat more voraciously than the tangs do

Beautiful fish Cl2ysta1!!

Has anyone checked out the New Life Specturum website? They have a video on how a moorish idol was brought back from an unhealthy state to a healthy in 30 days of NLS feedings only. Has anyone had any success with feeding their MIs with their foods? Because from the video it seems that MIs can be kept in aquariums easley if fed NLS.

Got my first MI! I went to the LFS and found a MI that looked really healthy. I asked to see him eat and he was eating mysis really well. I took him home and put him in a 30 gallon QT tank. I dropped a few pellets in the tank and the fish ate like a pig. I then tried bloodworms, which it tired but spit it out. I was just happy to see it eat right after going in the tank.

I am sure that once I get it in my display tank, it will be much happier. I will try to get a photo up soon.

Checked him this morning. He still looks the same. However, I am certain that he would be a lot happier in the larger display tank. But, I can not risk skipping the QT process.

I have him in an empty tank (no live rock or sand). Anyone have any suggestions on how to make him more comfortable? Thanks in advance!

How big is the QT? I recommend at least a 30 gallon QT and some rock. Most can't tolerate even a 30 gallon tank for much more than a week, so if you have a small QT, spend $100 on a bigger QT and put some established rock in the tank. As Paul said, it is not just simply getting the fish to feed, it then needs space and does best as one of the more dominant fish in the DT.

Thanks for your help! I have a 30 QT gallon tank that has water only (no rock or sand). The water is cycled, has a skimmer, etc. However, the MI just seems like he wants to get out of the tank. Paces back and fourth, etc. I do have some rock I can add to the tank. He ate again really well tonight. But I am sure that he would be better in my 220 display tank.

I really need to QT him for a couple of weeks at least. The place I got him from is not the cleanest place around and the fish always seem to be scratching. In fact, I usually only go there only to look as it is a big place. I saw the MI, and he looked so healthy, so I went for it. I am mostly worried about flukes. The MI is not scratching and seems completely clean thus far.

I do have an empty 55 that I can transfer him to. What do you think? Should I move him?

Thanks in advance!

Vince

I have quarantined so many healthy fish but if the qt is not well established your fish will go downhill fast. Put him in the DT asap if no signs of ich or any other sickness. I lost an MI that was doing well due to QT.
