The Moorish Idol Thread

So I got a MI that has been eating Rod's original & herbivore food, as well as tubiflex. He's now eating mysis (with zoecon and selcon) but he will not eat the Spectrum pellets.

I see where people who have MI's have been feeding them Spectram pellets for awhile. Should I just not worry about it, or is there a way to coax him into eating these?

Hi all. Thanks for such a great thread! I read it twice over at the start of 09 and then in feb asked my lfs if they could get me an idol and regal angel on the same day. A few days later i went to pick them up. I got to the lfs before they left their bags so i suppose that helped with stress. Within a day or so they were eating and swimming around together. In the last year they've had a tank upgrade and are doing well in my 180. The MI is the largest fish in my tank-he was the smallest(nearly).
I feed ocean nutrition pellets and flakes, frozen, fresh, the odd bit of sponge when i can get it. Thanks for the bananas paul!lol-they do like those.
Fish based cat food, read about that on here too, that works.
One thing i should mention though is that i work from home and most hours see my fish being fed. I feed sooooooooooooooooo often. Maybe that the key-constant food.
Anyway thanks for all of the great advice-i feel like i've been there with you guys through the highs and lows. Paul-when you lost yours, i felt gutted for you and zfunk the OP,when his died during the tank upgrade.
Best wishes all!

Thanks Richie, but better him than me.
I will not get another one unless I get a larger tank but I now feel that with what I have learned from swimming with them and the sponge I can harvest that I can keep one for their full lifespan. I may never know.
Have a great day
Paul

Well paul, many might consider my 180 too small. I dont know but i'll continue to do my best for him. Thanks again, you've been a true inspiration.
Have a great day too!

Dont worry as long as hes eating! Mine have never had spectrum pellets.
Are they the ones with sponge?
Just try and feed him as often as you can.

Shortly after posting my MI pic he decided to nip at my crocea clam. The clam closed on it, almost to his eyes.
My wife called me frantic saying the MI was laying on the bottom of the tank. So Im going home she calls me again saying it was stuck in the clam. I get home take a butter knife and slowly pry the clam open. The MI slowly falls to the bottom, almost lifeless. At this point my wife is in tears, and im heart broken. I let him/her lay there, and turned off the white lights. About 20-30 minutes later he is swimming around. Later that evening I feed and he isnt interested. I noticed his mouth was stuck open a little bit. The next day I fed again, and he wasnt able to open his mouth to suck food in. By the end of the day he had figured out to get down current from the food and swim into the food. After a few days he was able to open his mouth more and more, and eat. He is back to normal eating mysis, spectrum flake, and nori. After reading this thread more, Im going to look for a flake with sponge in it.
We have a joke going"the morrish idol eating clam"....

I was thinking of adding a clam myself. I'm sure Paul B has a clam as have many others. Do they usually do well with an idol?

thanks

I don't think they have sponge in them.

However, I was adding my usual Spectrum and Thera-A pellets last night, and he ate a few. I think he was having trouble locating them, but the more he sees the other fish gobble them down, the more he wants some. Hilarious!

I have a 3-4 inch crocea and maxima which he has not touched. They were added to the tank before he was, so that might mean something. Or, he could just go crazy one day and eat the clams. :)
