The Moorish Idol Thread

I am looking for some advice. I bought the moorish idol on Sat. It has been in the shop for more than 1 week and was eating pellets.

Sat. - 4 hour acclamation. It's in a 30g QT connected to the main tank so water condition is good. 3 small pieces of live rock.
Sun. - ate frozen brine and nibbled at pellets.
Mon. - ate frozen mysis, brine and nibbled at pellets.
Tus. - since Mon. night it kinds of hide behind a piece of rock. Sometimes come out and pacing for a while then go back. But it does not eat anything.

There are a few ick spots but nothing very serious and it's not getting worse.

Need some help with what to do. It does not look very promising.

Have you soaked food in garlic? Try NLS finicky fish formula. What was it eating at the LFS?

It was eating New ERA. I bought a bottle of that. I have tried NLS as well even though it's the regular it smells like garlic and have garlic as ingredient.

i don't understand why your QT is connected to the DT. your DT is now infected as well. from my experience with ich, it looks like it goes away, but it always comes back several days later. every time it comes back, it looks worse than before. I thought my LNB was fine, at first it was just a few white spots. they disappeared but came back a few days later. those disappeared but more showed up and they kept coming back until my LNB finally died. I tried to rescue the fish but it was already too late. I would take the MI and move it to another tank immediately and treat it. while your at it, let your DT go fallow for 70 days or so. it will pay at the end when you're fish are healthy and no more ich!

In my past 4 yrs of experience with my MI, I haven't noticed its health to be directly related to the growth of the streamer. This fish certainly enjoys large body of water and mine prefers to be one of the largest fish of the tank. I had to feed it 4 times a day during the first year or so, and now about 2 times a day. He used to only eat NLS finicky pellet, but now is okay with formula II, regular NLS, frozen krill, clam, mysis, and brine. He once got sick and was covered with ick. It was a FOWRL tank so I dosed it with cupermine, which quickly resolved the problem. Judging your MI wrt to the flame wrasse and what appears to be MP40 tells me he is about 4". If it still has ick, your best bet is to move him to a QT that's as large as possible. I now personally keep a 90 gallon QT just in case if a big fish gets sick. Good luck.

I disagree.... I have noticed a direct correlation.

Is that picture of yours?... mine looks the same... you can see the spine... I think it's getting skinny

I have cut back on feeding coz of the recent hot weather and the elevated nitrate in the water. It's stomach is still plumped and that spine is always visible for some reason. It's about 7" now. I will feed more when it cools down.

Thanks for the tips. Unfortunately I don't have anywhere close to the space for a 90g qt if needed; However I've been working on finding a suitable place to set one up (parents house mainly). The pump in the background is an mp60. There isn't any spots that i noticed on the body.

In the interim I've been feeding small amounts of pellets 4x a day and daily nori or algae grazer discs.
Also the bottom fish is a snowflake clown, and the fins up top belong to a copperband butterfly

my 1 year old still showing its spine but the belly is always full and it eats like a pig. I am too afraid to take it out to treat it if it has a internal parasite. i think its very happy specially now that he have companion.
