The Moorish Idol Thread

I had one and it only lasted about a month. In my case I think it was due to the other fish were well established and the MI was the last fish I added. My LFS gave it to me for free knowing the risk factors. The MI could not compete with the other fish for food. I tried everything. MI ended up hiding in a specific corner of my tank and eventually died. Pretty Sad.

Any suggestions on catching my MI? He's too tall for the trap (but did he ever try  ). Night time sneak attack, maybe?

Probably your best bet. Though mine seems to be pretty crafty even at night.

Otherwise move all your rocks to one side and corral him on the other.

Going on 3 months so far and the MI still appears happy. The yellow is brighter, the black stripes darker. However the streamer isn't growing :/ I wonder if it just gets snagged on the rockwork. Eats pellets, Julian springs nori and new era algae grazer.

I'm going to post this. I doubt anyone will believe me. Heck, I wouldn't believe me if I read this. But here goes...

So for a couple years now, my MI has had "short" fins... basically it looked like the back edges of the tail, dorsal, and anal fin were deteriorating. Like some sort of HLLE. But it was always the same... never worse, never better. Well, after observing the fish for quite a long time, over many days, it turns out the MI allows some butterflies to eat the back portions of his fins. I swear... I kid you not. I witnessed it numerous times. It looked the same as fish cleaning another fish, but 1. These species of butterflies aren't known to "clean" other fish, and 2. They are actually eating soft tissue.

I have no clue what is up with this. But anyway, the MI is being rehomed to a much less crowded tank.

Just thought I'd share.

I have never heard of this happening until now... Was it late when you witnessed this?

 No, middle of the day. I don't often watch my FOWLR for extended periods of time, so I rarely get to see what the fish are normally doing, as opposed to rushing the corner when I walk into the room, expecting food.

My friend will be picking up the MI today. Sad to see it go, but happy it'll be in a nice tank.

John -

Someone is likely nipping at the streamer. They normally grow pretty darned fast. The streamer on my Idol is at least 6" long. Nori has always helped mine grow, but I see you are feeding Nori. I'd look for nipping from someone...

Usingthejohn, Powerheads can also chew up the streamer. I made custom guard covers for my tunes.

I Thank you both for your responses.
Coincidentally, after Pinnatus ' s response, I noticed the streamer growing.

Here's mine... Got him in august, after he spent 5 months at the lfs. We had a hard time with the paperwork and the domestic flights in the begginning of this year in Brazil, mainly because of the World Cup.

The first pic was taken in september (09.08) and the other a month ago (11.01). I think he got a lot better in the meantime. :D

He eats anything I put in the tank, but the staple is NLS pellets and nori. I have a lot of sponge growing in the fuge, and give him a bunch of it from time to time. The palys in the first pic became part of the menu too, except the big one just behind him in the pic. It seems to be very un-tasty, since the MI and the filefish never looked to it.

Best regards.

Daniel.

Most people have had trouble with multiple Idols, they tend to kill each other off until just one remains, but most people do not have 1300 gallon tanks. It may work out fine for you.

Thank you. I youst came from the Maledives there i was diving. I mostly saw MI together with a Partner. The most time the are distance is not more than half a meter. So i think it is more naturally with a Partner.
Greetings
