The Moorish Idol Thread

Im gonna be building a 5'x4'x30" tank after the holidays, would that be a good size for a pair?

i would not try it. first, a 5ft tank is to small for just one of these fish. unless they are a bonded pair, the bigger one will kill the other one. they may be together at the fish store but as they mature this will happen. they are an open water fish that need a lot of swimming room and high o2 levels and must be feed at least 4 times a day.

I have no issues with the o2 levels and i already feed my tanks 6 times a day. I may not get a pair or even one but maybe later on try a single. Depending on how i arange my tank. Ty for the input.

i am at 10 weeks today. here is a bad pic.

...I tried to take pics too,and got the same blurred results. They won't stay in one place long enough to allow for pictures. They are very similar to the Energizer bunny. They do not stay still,24 hours a day,and sounds like some people have MI's,like mine, that eat like pigs. They must have an extremely high metabolism.I am going to feed mine now.

here is another blurred pic, streamer has stayed long for awhile now. you are correct, they never stop moving.

Where has everyone got theirs from who has gotten one in the last 6 months?

My trusted LFS. I bought two, but one refused to eat at home, even though he ate at the store.
They had a few on Monday that have been there over 4 weeks.

I have seen quite a few for sale recently,at almost every LFS I have been to recently. There was a really nice display at my favourite store with several MI's.Generally around 60 dollars,is what they sell at.I almost purchased another, however,I do not want to affect what is going on with the one in my aquarium presently. Some things I have read about having two is positive and unfortunately I have heard that sometimes it doesn't work out well...

i have done a lot of reading and i have not heard of any forced pairings that have worked. i would resist the idea.

I haven't necsarrily forced my pair together, but they work. They were in QT for a month. The bigger one pictured is BIG. Over 6" across and 8" high. The smaller one next to him is almost 4".

that seems to be the case every time. everything is ok for awhile and then the switch gets flipped on and it is kick *** time.

Ya, for sure. I thought I actually got away with it, it worked out for so long. But one day, the bigger one just said enough, and pinned the smaller guy in the corner. Luckily I was able to catch him and rehome.

You're fortunate that you could intervene without any collateral damage.I had to remove a Tomato clownfish from my display tank and that took hours. My MI stopped eating 24 hours after that disruption. It's been fine since. It still seems to be benefitting from the interactions
of my two yellow tangs that have been in constant company. All are about 5 inches.Seems to keep them all very active.
