The Moorish Idol Thread

Hey paul,
I had a great time at Walt Smiths but he didn't have any Idols. :( But I did get a beautiful male Watanabei angle. :D I also pickd up a few other fish as well. Maybe next time.

Hi all,
I have been following this thread for some time now. What a great depth of knowledge I have picked up about MIs. Thanks everyone for their input.

I took the plunge and got two MIs 3 weeks ago, sadly one died after white spots. Now the surviving one is still eating, however its still recovering from the white spots. :-(

When the MI and my tank are back to tip top condition I would like to pair it up again. Has anyone had any successful stories about pairing MI in captivity when they were not caught in the wild as a pair?

Fish life span

Fish life span

I have had my emperor for 4 years, naso tang 6 years, blue tang 7 years, clown trigger 7 years, other fish about 3 years. So they really seem to live long if taken care of. This is a 200 gallon fish only tank with a wet/dry, no live rock. I do weekly 20% water changes, have a 40 watt uv, and feed frozen formulas, dried seaweed, krill. They just keep going. No parasite/health issues because I haven't added a new fish for 3 years.

Grimm Update:
in the past 5 days i have lost over half my fish
1st neon dottyback 3yr
mia lawnmower blenny 2mo.
blue ring angle 5yr+
pink anthais 2yr +
Yellow tang 3yr in differnt tanks

still holding on are my 1 yr clown
and 2.5 Idol

at the moment i have no idea what happened
i started changing water 3 days ago. the tang was the last to die yesterday, he was getting ich, secondary im sure

the clown and idol do not seem to be eating.
but fighters they must be.
im off to do some more water changes now.

Man that's some hard losses. Sorry to hear about it.

What have you done recently to the tank? Something happened somewhere. Do you have any toxic animals in the tank that might have gotten sucked into a powerhead? Things like cucumbers, sea apples and such. If so, do a massive waterchange and run carbon 24/7. Actuall that might not be a bad idea anyways. How's the water parems?

As was once stated, the solution to polution is diloution. Just make sure your new water is as close to the same parems as your tank.

Did you happen to add a fish lately? That's all it takes is one newly added fish to wipe out a whole tank. I haven't added a fish in 6 months and if I ever do QT it for 6-8 weeks, not worth the risk to my Idol and other fish.

Sorry to hear about your tank LivingDeadFish. Thats one of the quirks with this hobby. Things tend to start dying for no reason. The fact that your Idol is still alive shows something. I am still of the belief that a well established, fat and eating Idol is tougher than people give them credit for.

My Idol has been through alot: A hurricane which left us without power for a week. My tanks were down for hours on end. Multiple sick fish passing through my system. Quite a few small ich out breaks. Being chased for 2 hours while I ripped apart my 210 reef to get him out to put him into my 110, which he is now far to big for. And of course the fact that he was skinny and unhealthy when I got him. I'd have to say that my Idol is a pretty tough fish. At least I think so.

My 110 FOWLR is becoming my "difficult fish to keep tank." I just added a beautiful supermale Stripped Parrotfish and he is getting along with my Idol and Regal famously. Right now I put some cuttings of grape caulerpa into the tank and they devour it. Especially the Idol. He loves that stuff.

I have 3 or 4 different kinds of caulerpa I give to him along with the spectrum pellets. And right now, thats all he gets. I am heading down to the keys on the 1st for a 5 day dive trip. So I am going to be bringing back alot of nice sponges for him to munch on. Hope everyones Idols are doing ok.

Nice to see you back on posting again blown63chevy. Glad to hear your tank is doing good. Now you just need that Idol to make it complete :)

I've been lurking around here and there. ;)

So far I haven't found one. Like I posted earlier, I did find a beautiful watanabei angle, I'll have to get a pic of him whenever he comes out of the rocks. I'm working on a trade right now to get rid of three of my fish. After that, I'll start looking again for a idol or two. ;)

Hi Guys

Haven't been around for a while due to PC issues and really busy (BTW laptops and bottles of beer don't mix well at all)

Anyway my Idol is still doing fine, REALLY intelligent and responsive fish, will eat anything at all and has stopped pestering my softies at last. If he sees me go to the freezer in the kitchen he basically comes to the front of the tank and vibrates like an excited dog LOL "FEED ME" he's a REAL character.

Here's a pic, take with my phone-cam so not the best resolution

The P/Blue is a lovely fish but a Psychopath with the softies but that's for another thread

Cheers

Well I just got back from the keys a few days ago. And I must say, it was fabulous. I figured I'd post a picture of some of the sponges I got for my Idol. They are all orange and yellow orange and he is loving them so far. My Regal Angel has also taken a liking to them. Here they are:

sponge4tz.jpg

I got them in a sea grass bed next to a large patch reef where I was diving. There were all kinds in the grass but these looked the best. I have no clue what kind they are but I guess I could try and figure it out. My Idol has never been picky about sponge. He eats just about any kind of sponge I put in.

As always, hope everyones Idols are doing well.

I guess I will update. My Idol is still doing great, I guess it is a little over two years old. The only problem is he is too big for my 100 long tank and I keep removing rock. I am almost out of sponge and unlike Zfunk I can't collect it here in NY in the winter.
The Idol will eat anything, I think he would eat cardboard. I still give him vitamin A and Selcon but because of a picky copperband butterfly he also gets black worms every day.

Hi everypne,

Without having to go through the whole thread, what's been everyone's experience with MIs touching corals?
The one I have touches SPS every so often. It also bugs my clam.

Mike de Leon, mine does not touch any corals and I did not see them eat corals in the sea but a lot of people have problems with this.
Chevy, good to hear from you. In NY there are Idols all over the place. Come on over for a visit and I will get you some.

Although my Idol eats anything, sponge is still his favorite and NY sponge is gross looking.
Paul

Beware of your corals Mike de Leon. My Idol ate just about every coral in my tank at one time or another (not that they all do this but just my experience). So you have to be careful and be prepared to possibly lose a few.

My Idol has finished off all that sponge in the picture I posted a while ago. Well all except the big orange one which he didn't seem to like very much. But the yellow sponge he went to town on.

Thanks for everyone's reply. The one I had actually did not make it during our upgrade from 70 gal to 135. We are now speculating on getting another MI. One lfs has had one for close to two years that is doing very well in his display tank. The owner is getting rid of it for a lot of money. We might just take another chance. Is it worth it??

I too have a Moorish Idol. I've had him since early December when I bough my (used) tank. I didn't know that he was such a difficult fish to keep but really didn't have a choice really. Previous owner was going to take him to Phoenix (from Columbus) and set him up in a new tank if I didn't take him. I believe he came from a wholesaler in Flordia about a year ago.

I have him in a 120Gal (my next tank will be bigger for him) with a Flagfin Angel, two Blue Green Chromies, a Yellow watchman Goby, two Skunk Cleaner Shrimp, an Emerald Crab, and some Turbo Snails and Hermit Crabs. He is definately the Alpha fish in my tank. He seems to get a long with everyone, but he doesn't hesitate to let them know who is boss. He seems like a very curious, but very stupid fish.

I've even seen him chase the Flagfin once or twice and the flagfin is almost bigger than he is. The Goby is the only one to mess with him, but only when the MI is in his space. About a month ago, I bought some small (maybe too small) occelaris clowns and the MI killed them. :( Makes me afraid to add anything else at a later point.

My MI will eat almost anything I throw at it. He seems to have a liking for bubbles though . I feed Formula One, Formula Two, Brine Flake, Spirulina Flake, Frozen Brine and Frozen "Angel and Butterfly Food." Occasionally we'll put a piece of lettice or spinich in and they like that too. I've heard malnutrition can be a big problem, so I've tried to vary their food as much as I can. I'd like to see about getting him some of the sponge people here are feeding.

Occasionally mine will flash a pale color if he is spooked or stressed. At night he gets pretty pale too. I've tried to include some pictures, but my camera is pretty bad and with the delay its hard to capture pictures when he is zooming all over the tank.

Showing some nice colors here, but its a bad picture.

I accidentally took this one with the flash

Where do you guys think the best place to get idols is. I have seen them mail order but my LFS can also get them in. My LFS will even let me QT the fish at there shop for a couple of weeks...At my risk ofcourse.

Thanks for the help
Scott

He seems like a very curious, but very stupid fish.

I hate to say this but it is true. I have had quite a few of them and I followed them in the sea and they do seem stupider than other fish. I don't know what it is but when you watch fish for long enough you can just tell. For instance a copperband butterfly or royal gramma seem much smarter to me.

Scott, where in NY is that? Here on Long Island I can get moorish Idols all over the place. They are about $25.00.
Paul

Paul I am upstate in the Fingerlakes. How are the idols around you?? If there in good shape I will make the roady for a few. I know a few people who are looking for them including my LFS. The ones he orders are never in good shape.
