From what i understand Charles aka chin monster was the original owner of what is now being called the Tyree Red Watermelon. He sold a large chunk to Hugo, which he than LE'd! Charles name for the original piece was the Monster_mash. The only person to even credit the original owner that i've seen is Eric at fragfarmer. If thish is in fact true (which i believe it is) the lineage should get corrected on reeffarmers so that its credited to the correct person.

I've also heard the same thing from a couple of people.

Cool, Thanks ;)

Right now, mine has been getting blasted with light. I have been "experimenting" with some different elements lately :p

What have you been finding? Mine changes colors, but I've always had it in the same spot. lol.

I am have been finding a lot of similarities within echinos that have smaller eyes/mouths like the OG mummy eye, aspera, OS and such. The best comparison I can give to them is like a human eye ball. WHen they get too much light, it seems like they "squint" and the eyes become smaller and the colors seem to blend together. I have even seen the OG ME go rainbow and even close to orange in one case.

It also seems like enchinos with larger mouths like the Jayda or the 4 color chalice can take more light than I originally believed.

There are some other things I have been playing around with as well. I am sure that many people here already are aware of this, but sometimes we reefers "forget" to share :p

One explanation of why a coral can remain in the same spot and change colors could also be due to the bulbs themseves. Certain bulbs have very poor quality control and they vary drastically from one bulb to the next and they can even burn quite different from one month to the next, thus effecting par values and the light being delivered to the corals themselves.

mark, great explanation on coloration and great pictures of your Aspera and Orange Sherbert! Thanks for sharing :)

Wow at least someone around here, knows about the Monster Mash.Back then his frags were 125.I hope and didn't open a can of worms here. It's just the name was around many years ago.And never really knew what happened to it.Does anyone know if Chin is still in the hobby? This coral came in the time the rainbow monti's were a big hit.The Chalice corals were hardly around back then.Surely not like we are seeing today.

I love the name "Monster Mash" don't know the coral only because I was a hardcore SPS guy that hadn't quite made the transition to the wonderful world of LPS, now I am a hardcore LPS guy and although I still love the "sticks" I absolutley love my LPS. In any case I would love to see a picture or hear more about the "Monster Mash", I think the name should actually be revived and given to another chalice! "Monster Mash II" The Return!

I have a small frag of the Monster_mash that came directly off Charles' mother colony, lined through two people. I'll get a pic and post it.

If some one can email me.I still have 2 pics of the Monster Mash Chalice if they want to post them.It does look a lot like the Red Watermelon Chalice. Not sure how to post these 2 pics.

Mark - Thanks for sharing the info. So the OG ME turns from green to rainbow or orange? Thats wicked. Now that I think about it, my aspera was a better color under radiums 20k, now its under a aqualine 20k (I think). I wanna get rid of this bulb, but I've only used it for 3 months, what a waste. Been thinking of trying an ushio 20k.

Very interesting to hear about the "Monster Mash" and Tyree Red Watermelon connection. I have the red watermelon and have been searchign for the Monster Mash for quite a long time...I believe Hector has some of it. I wonder what his thoughts are on the similarities as he probably has the Red as well and can do a comparison side by side.

I voted for the Original Pink Watermelon as I still love that coral so much. My Bazooka Joe is still to small to really get a good comparison between the two...but it simply glows pink...I was torn between the two for the poll but, in the end, went with the Original Pink.

Kev, great thread/poll :D

Thanks Alicia, I wanted to see what people were thinking with so many beautiful chalice's in the hobby & also as a way to see more eye candy ;)

Here are pix of the Monster Mash. This is not my piece.

I want a Monster Mash! I like the rim on it, also a bit surprised that more people don't have it...I know either Alicia or bigian has it??

I think wrong. Not many people have this piece and the original owners mother colony died. Iam sure glad I have mine lol!

i only know of 3 people that have a piece of it, myself included. Thats not saying more people don't have it, im just surprised its not mentioned more often. Its a highly sought after piece, at least among the San Diego crowd! :D

Funny thing about the owner of the Monster Mash is that everytime he listed it for sale, he kept giving me the run around and wouldn't sell a frag to me. Did that happen to anyone else?

Thanks Jose for posting the picture of it.Waiting for my PM message from you? It's funny because this Chalice has been around at least 5 years what I remember. He would post frags of it,in the Southern Cali forum.I don't think he was to fond of shipping then.I was just lucky I guess.I also after all these years, there is more than just 3 frags.I'm sure others have it,but won't say.Charles used to take frags also to the frag swap.So they are out there for sure.A coral this old, just can't have only 3 frags?
