The New Exotic

I have travel over 28 countrys and never see a store like exotic.
Why are people say the fireman afarid to go in??
I do see they have a lot of customers.
I belive the america is the best place to do marine goods shopping.
Like my business, some customer like to find bone in an egg.
Did anyone see how we shop for marine goods?

Troy: Exotic get's ORA stuff? I emailed ORA to see what LFS in Sacramento orders from them, and I got this response:

Hi Patrick, I think you can try www.saltwaterfish.com or www.liveaquaria.com to find the conch. We don't have a retailer in Sacramento.
Thanks,
Vince Rado
ORA

I don't know how the fish/coral logistics stuff works. Maybe ORA sells to a distributor, and Exotic buys from that distributor? I was looking for a conch at the time and Exotic had some that sorta looked like Strombus alatus ... but when I asked if thats what it was, nobody knew. So... I passed ;) Although one of the staff members did say that some of their orders come from ORA :hmm2:

Anyway, I have a lot of stuff from Exotic, and I find that it's hit and miss. The owner is very kind every time I come in and I hope that he is successful.

I don't go that deep into it. All I know is, that there is a thread in the SPS forum that say's lets see your O.R.A. chips acro. I looked at it and I have the same exact colony. The only difference is mine is teal green with purplish blue tips. And it's real furry. I talked to Matt again about nice SPS coming through. He says it looks pretty good. I can't wait.

I dont know why peeps be hatin on Exotic, I get most of my livestock from them also and I have never had any probs.
I think the ones who complains just run into the wrong sales person at Exotic. They have a huge selection of freshwater so they might have reps who are knowledgable in that area and whats not to say that the ones who complain or asking about saltwater was talking to someone who is a freshwater guy and just didnt know.
I know a few guys that work there that know more about saltwater corals and some that are just rare fish geeks than most people that post on this club.
ANd if you guys talk all this stuff about a store then STOP GOING THERE. LOL!!!! just my .02

I was thinking of going there today to see if they had a purple tang available. Maybe I can still go when my headache subsides.

Hi there! Guess where I work? No thin skins here. I actually am interested in what we could do to help make our store better?
I know the tanks are just now getting to the six month mark, so be gentle on us there. We do have Sac cty wtr to deal with.
Our corals are likely to get very nice very soon. The cold weather is a serious hurdle to getting healthy animals. The vast majority of our marine selection is quite healthy and we will try to make you aware of any selections you make that are in questionable health.
Also, be aware that not everyone working here has a decade of reef experience. Many of these guys are in high school still and only have freshwater experience. Understand they want to make the customer happy, and sometimes you get fish in pipes instead of pipefish. (funny):p
Remember, we get quized all day on a broad spectrum of aquaria related issues. We try to be right every time. Reality is that we will run into something that we just have no idea about, and need to ask someone else. After all, the only bad answer is a wrong answer.
Oh, and see about mentioning a fat raise for the blonde headed guy to the store manager.

Every store has its pros and cons, just be thankful that we have a choice in our area and that we truely are spoiled when it comes to that selection between all of them.

Some communites only have Walmart or PetCo as an outlet to get supplies locally, consider yourselves lucky and take the good and the bad for what it is worth.

I am sure we could point out the bad in all of them, and I can understand a rant if you feel you were cheated or wronged in some way and would like sympathetic ears to complain to.

But threads like these are generally non productive and send out a negative tone towards the club in the longrun and the LFS feel that they can do nothing right and we are a bunch of picky, cheap, unsatisfied pains rather than a group of passionate enthusiats that want to help them create the best stores possible. If you are concened with changing a stores policy or services I suggest trying another approach and spinning it towards positive suggestions and tone that may be recieved better. Because there are a TON of people who visit this forum who are associated with the LFSs in one way or another, as I am NOT one of them.

In the longrun, with as many choices as have become available in the last few years, and online availability I will bet that competition for business is heating up and stores that are not up to par will have to adapt or will fall away eventually.

As a MARS member, I would like to help my LFS stores succeed in the longrun, because they are your neighbors working there, so we all benifit. If you are interested in doing so, please do it in a postive, contructive manner or don't do it at all.

Consider this: A forum where people openly talked constantly only about the negatives where you work? How would it make you feel about those people who do nothing but complain in an open setting about something you may not have the power to change? How would that make your feel towards that group?

You guys are doing fine and have made vast improvements since moving. Rome was not built in a day and I see improvements everytime I visit. Keep up the good work!! I commend you on addressing these comments/concerns.

Thanks Dots.
And just so you all know, I wrote my last post at the same time Dots wrote his. Mine posted first but his was there as soon as I refreshed.

Anyone feel inclined to share some things you would like to see different at the local shops? Or something you found at one store that made you really like that location?

I remember reading a post recently about a guy who said the owner of one shop remembered his tank and a credit owed just by seeing the guy walk in his shop. Seemed to impress the guy.

And be honest. Some stuff just cant be fixed, but you never know till you ask.

I like Exotic. You guy just need more people in the saltwater dept. I spent for almost 30 minutes before I can find someone helping me out last time. Just hired more people on the weekend :D .. Other than that, I think you guys are doing fine.

How about a website with pictures of all new arrival. :D:D:D that way i don't have to drive an hour just to see what you have.

that would help me out alot.

I second that idea and I think they are actually setting up their website as we speak/write.

I bought most of my fish there too, and had my share of pleasure seeing some of the rare marine fish they sometimes got in. Mat is the guy who knows saltwater so ask for him though he may not always be there.

I had good talks with Tim, one of the store owners I think, from time to time (he is the only store manager who I consider nice BTW:)). They just brought in the 600g+ reef display setup, will be interesting to see what they can do with it. I was also told that they were running out of room and plan to open up the warehouse in the back someday which can increase the store area by at least 30%.

I don't know why people are afraid to go there during the day, I live in a very nice area but work very close to Exotic, never find it hard to get around the area during the day. Nothing is perfect.

I must admit while their price is still very good, it is not as good as when they were at the old location, but their overhead must not be light given the size and how much money does it take to open a new store of such magnitude.

They certainly can, if they want to. It's been a while since I've gotten an order from ORA but all you need is a business license, retail selling certificate from the CA BOE and a $200 minimum fish order. Any LFS in town could buy from them, and they ship direct to the store. No middle man.

If you guys want ORA captive bred firsh, corals, and clams, demand it. Any LFS can get it for you.
