The Reef Central Corner Club Thread

Great thread! I was wondering if anyone can tell me the overflow rate on a oceanic 92gl corner bow? and whats the best magnetic glass cleaner for the bow front?

TIA

Sid

hey flfireman1, your tank looks absolutely fantastic, i love the lighting in there, i forgot how great some corners can look, its a picture.

First off love the thread there are some amazing tanks here and I hope that one day I can have a tank half as nice. I had a 55 gal with a huge stand and due to the powers to be had to get something that went with the dining room alittle better. I came across a 54 gal corner for 150 thought that was a steal. I took it in and had it drilled 2 returns and 2 drains. I have about 120 lbs of live rock, and a half inch sand bed. Lighting is 250 watt 14k metal halide and 2 65 watt actinic pc about 12 inchs from the water. I have 6 fish and about 15 to 20 coral frags, going for a mixed reef.
Now to the question I have a rio 1700 and a rio 2100 as my returns and they are in the middle of the tank facing the front. I have a korrilla 2 and two knock off korrillas that say they push 800gph that I am not using. Are my returns enough or do I need to use one of the powerheads or all of the powerheads????????

I will tell you that I have the larger 92g corner and I have for flow (aside from my return pump) 1 vortech mp40, 2 koralia 3's and 2 koralia 4's.
I have found its hard to get good flow with all the corners.

The built-in Megaflow system in the 92g tank can only handle a max flow rate of 600gph which is not that great a flow. That's why we all need additional PHs to supplement the water flow within the tank. I don't know if the same is true for the 54g tank with your custom drains and returns. As flfireman1 said, it is hard to get good flow with all corner tanks, I think you need all of your PHs.

In my 92g tank, I use a Pan World 50PXX external pump for return which is rated at 1100 gph max but I think the real performance at 5 ft head is probably half of the max flow. In my DT, I also have a Polario 15ML and a Koralia 4 for additional internal flow. I think it all depends on how you arrange your rockscape. If you have a lot of rocks and they are piled against the sides and back, you will still have a lot of dead spots.

I have 6 phs in my corner at the moment, as mentioned they are difficult to get flow right in them, its a lot of fun trying to get it right though.

Well thank you for the input, like I said I have 2 returns coming out of the very back of the tank at the top of the water facing the front glass. I have a K2 and 2 knockoff K3's where should I put them and facing what way. I attached a pic of the front of my tank so you can look at the rockwork, so you can give me placement suggestions. Sorry about the quality I dont have the best camera. Thanks again

Half way down on each of the sides pointing slightly to the front glass so the flow bounces around the front is an idea, also 1 at the top corner at the back pointing to the surface and front, this will cause a nice flow.

Thanks for the reply Michael. I actually rescaped my rockwork after going through this thread, so many nice tanks I decided to change mine. I took out about 50 lbs of rock and I put my korrilla 3 (knockoffs) on the front glass facing the middle of the tank. Don't know if that s good but everything seems to be moving now.

well if its working then thats good enough, Im glad your positioning is making things move, I may try that myself next time I have a play

Greetings, all --- great thread! Popping my RC Forum posting cherry on this one...

So, I've recently purchased a 92 gal corner bowfront and will soon be custom building a stand and canopy. Currently, I have a 55 gal long mixed reef with 4x55W T5HO lights and 2 Koralia 3's supplying the flow. As part of the design, I'll be implementing a basement sump/fuge/ATO system... but for now, I'm just gathering a parts list.

Question 1: Since my current lighting system is 48" long, I'm searching for new lights. Would a 2x175W MH system supplemented with 24" T5 actinics be adequate for this tank? I would think so, but I'm not sure if the 175W MHs can sufficiently supply the sand substrate with sufficient PAR.

Question 2: What's your recommendation on supplemented flow? I was thinking of adding some Koralia 2s behind the rockwork to keep the 'dead spots' from accumulating... (recently redid my 55 rockwork and it was just nasty!)

Looking forward to the project and will definitely be starting my own build thread! Thanks for all your help and suggestions!

Nice tanks everyone!!

Just wanted to post some pics of my 70 corner Perfecto (equivalent to a 90 corner just has a flat back no corner)

It's about 8 months old been recently adding corals, mixed reef.

Tanks are looking pretty good guys! I've been really inactive lately due to heavy work and school schedule but now that the holiday school break is coming up I'm looking forward to getting back to the tank. Not much has happened with my tank lately. Not much good at least. Had my return pump leak a huge amount of electricity and ended up frying most of my fish. Really a shame too, the fish population was starting to really look good. Only survivors were a yellow tang and 2 chromis. So the 92 gallon looks pretty bare. The few corals and 1 clam I have are all doing great though!
Anyway, got that return pump exchanged. Working a bunch of overtime lately to upgrade some things like my powerheads and skimmer. I only have 2 tunze 6025's and 2 hydor k3's, flow isn't much. I've been accumulating a ton of brown algae on the sandbed and thinking it might be partly due to lack of flow. So about to upgrade. Was thinking all tunze, 2 6045's, 2 6065's. That would essentially double my flow. For a short while thought about a vortech but hear too many complaints about noise and since the tank is right next to the couch in the living room noise is not an option. Anyone have opinions, think those 4 powerheads might do my trick for SPS? Thinking of 2 in the front corners and 2 in the back corners somehow behind rock work. Have lots of room behind the rocks anyway.
Also in december planning to upgrade the skimmer, talked to Mojo~ and looks like it'll be an ATB 840v2. Just gotta wait for a bunch of overtime I'm working over christmas break.
Lastly, my brother is building me a new stand finally. Can't wait, it'll be 36inches high instead of the 30 that it's on now. Also planning to make it a little bigger to fit a 29g sump inside. He does great wood work just is very slow, so I'll post pictures of the new stand as soon as I get the tank on it.
Good luck all, Happy Thanksgiving!

Hello All,

I currently have an AGA 92 gal corner tank - set up as tropical, with Piranhas (caribe).
I am looking to this tank to switch to a mixed reef. I have done quite a bit of research and have some direction...bt was wonderign if anyone can suggest the following:

My tank is not RR (reef ready)...so i will be drilling for bulk heads.

I am looking at installing/setting up a (BennieAnimal) overflow system - As I am looking for a safe and quite overflow system....any one out there use this currently?

Stil not sure how I will know my gph though? and match it to a sump/return pump etc...

Sump/refg- I'd like to do my own DIY sump/refg, I was considering a corner design, so I can make better use of space and not be limited as much in terms of protien skimmer.
any design suggestions?

Freddy, can you kindly provide info on yours?
Anyone have any design suggestions on a DIY sump for corner stands (r=28")?

Any suggestions for Protien Skimmers? I was thinking the Reef Octopus Extreme XS 160...? i am looking for something quite too...any suggestions?

In terms of canopy/lighting I am stuck - i do not have a canopy, and don't really want to build one...my stand is the Pine wood one...so it would be hard to DIY one that matches (I think)...I prefer to switch to the Oceanic black stand and canopy...but they dont make those anymore...(anyone selling?)
any sugestions?

any ideas for lighting without a canopy?

I will look around in this thread...just lots of post to go through! wow!

BTW, I am in Toronto (mississauga), ONTARIO (canada)...anyone out here too?

Thanks all in advance!

Here's my light. There's a build before the splits.

You can use a hang on overflow. The GPH is only really determined by the flow of the return pump. Shoot for 4 to 5 times tank volume.

Cariba,

I had done cardboard cut outs that matched the foot print of certain tanks. I wanted the largest tank I could fit in my cabinet but with room to fit my skimmer and fuge and the kalk reactor on the side. As you can see I had to build up a little platform to be able to shift the tank over to the right, it does poke out a litte on the right side of the cabinet, but it cant be seen. BTW the sump/fuge is a 29 gal.

My DT is a Marineland Perfecto 70g. It is the same foot print of your 92 corner only difference is that it has a flat back, not a corner, with a custom overflow and drilled, I ordered it that way.

Before you drill your tank make sure it's not tempered. I have a Oceanic 30g cube that I had drilled and used a "glass holes.com" overflow. Their overflows work great too and come complete with everything you need to do it.

Hope that helps,
Fredy

Cariba,
I considered all sorts of L shaped and custom sump designs as well as the 20 tall before it hit me and and I went round. I cut the bottom off of a 55 ga plastic drum. It works really well as the pump and return keep the water moving with no dead spots and you wind up with a large amount of water and space. Im running an ASM G2 skimmer and a Sedra 900 return pump. I modded a plastic water bottle for a bubble trap which works perfectly too.
You can see the set up in my avatar. Hit me if you have any questions.

Misled... yes I went over your build before I even posted, I liked what you did...I dont think I can do something too similar because theres a window and trim near the "front end" of one side....I could do something similar but it would to be too small to look proper. (i refering to doing the canopy to float from the wall.

I think a custom type canopy (that sits on the tank top) with a design/look to match the stand would work best....but I'm goign to stay openminded and look around/think....thanks for clarifyign the flow rate.

Fredy...Yes I know/verified I can drill the sides; however, the bottom is not drillable (nor the front)....but I still think the 3 bulkhead (benieanimal) design will be best...
How many gls s your refugem?...do you mind explaining how your sump works in terms of flow...what flows to what? (thanks)

What protien skimmers are you guys using? what would you recommend?

Thanks guys,

Cariba,

If you look at the picture of my sump/fuge in the above post for reference.
The water drains in to the left hand side of the sump where the skimmer is, then it flows through the baffles (bubble diffuser 3 glass panels) and in to the sump return section. I the return section I have a Mag 9.5 that feeds the display and is T'd off to feed my refuge. I used gate valves to control flow to the display tank and fuge. You will notice a little nub above the first gate valve to the fuge, ignore it, that was a supply line for a 30g Cube I had plumbed to my sump. You can't see the second gate valve because it's block my RKL control panel in the picture.

I built my sump around the equipment I was using. When I received my skimmer, I made that section of the sump big enough to fit it with my heaters. The remaining part I got creative and suspended the Fuge part, I did not want my return section to be too small so I would have room for any misc. equipment I might add in the near future. If you look at the Fuge I have a couple of small glass pieces that I cut just to give it some extra support. The Fuge section is roughly 6 gal. I used acrylic teeth for the overflow of the fuge to help keep noise down and keep my clean up crew contained, you can use gutter guard too but its loud. I had the the guys at Glass Holes cut me the overflow guard, great stuff just glues on with Silicone. The overflow of the fuge drains in to the return section that gets pumped back in to the display.

I hope that helps.

Fredy
