The Reef Central Corner Club Thread

Hey Kids! thought i'd post some pics of the 92. A while back you might remember i had to re-seal it; well it's been up and running for a while now and my lazy backside finally snapped a couple shots for you...

however, my 430 ballast keeps blowing out my 3 24" T5 bulbs so the only thing running is a 250w MH. Perhaps i just need to put in a workhorse and leave it be.

Hi -I just discovered this thread and can't wait to read it.

I have a 92 corner with a 20 high sump. It is lit with 250W MH lighting. It has been set up since 2004.

This is a pic from years ago, but I need to take a new one to share. I had a crash in August and I am working on getting it back.

Here is a more recent pic - I had a tank crash in August and had to basicly start over with corals, fish etc. I am still going through the algea stages (dinos, cyano, HA) and have bubble algea. I am working hard at kicking the issue.

Mounted on the walls are the Alternative Reef Magnetic Frag Stations that I got from Midwest Saltwater. They should color up to the rock color in time.

Current inhabitants:
Yellow Tang
Black Regal Tang
2 Occy Clowns
Black Cap Basslet
Blue Dot Jawfish
Flame Angel
Various Snails
2 Cleaner Shrimp

Very nice Jenghes.

I love those frag station and think that they may have to find a place in my tank.... gonna check them out for sure.......

I wish I could fit a bigger sump under my tank but alas.......oh well. I am planning on purchasing a calcium reactor and trying to figure out how I am gonna do it under there.

Keep us posted on the progress of the rebuild.....

I forgot to post my 20g high sump. It is a little unconventional since I only have single walls in it - but it works for me. They are plexiglass and I drilled lots of little holes in them to allow the water to pass through.

The first section is my inlet/sock/skimmer. In the sock, I have a stocking of GFO to force the water through. I also drape a stocking of carbon.

The second is the "fuge" I keep some rubble/chaeto and right now a pair of baby onyx clowns, since the sump is fully devided, they are safe from the pumps down there. Once our basement is finished, I plan to start a small tank for their permanent home. It is lit with an el-cheapo spiral bulb.

The third is the return pump.

On the other side under the tank is my MH ballast.

beautiful sk8r, different and beautiful, I don't think ive seen your tank for quite a while, very nice.

Thanks! It's a lot 'airier' with the ball broken into long-stemmed bits. Light gets through, and the little fishes I favor have a good time with the caves.

I also got the azure damsel---I love damsels for their color and activity, and the azure is pretty mild and not so big as some. I'm hoping the azure/chromis pairing will be active but that nobody will fight. Also, since only one per school tends to be high color, maybe with no competitors but each other, both will be. I'm also trying my hand at acans. I'm having such great luck with the euphyllias, thought I'd see what I can out of that fellow in the far corner.

Ok so here's the question. I have a 54g corner bowfront. A common tank in this thread only, hahahahaha. I am using a sump with a hang on Coralife (junk) skimmer. I would like to upgrade to a higher quality skimmer. I really am tight on space under there as many of you know. Here is a pic of the space under my tank and my current setup. What suggestions for brand and setup does everyone have.... I want a GOOD skimmer........

Thanks

It looks like you're doing a good job making use out of the tiny space under the corner tank - what size sump is that? I'm actually going to tag along to find out what people think are "good" skimmers because I really don't know. I always assumed if it pulls a lot of scum, continues to work reliably and is moderately quiet, then it's a "good" skimmer. I'm very happy with the two skimmers I have (Aqua C Remora: one in-sump for my 92 gallon corner tank and one HOB for my 46 gallon bowfront) but since those are the only two I've ever had I don't have anything to compare them to.

Check these out. I have one and love it! By far the best bang for your buck.

I would look into the tunze skimmers. They have a small footprint and you might be able to get it into your sump. They are high performance skimmers as well.

Unfortunately there is not room for an in sump skimmer. There is barely room for the pump that drives my coralife. The return pump section is 6 by 9 by 11 inches deep. VERY VERY SMALL.

Sue, Thanks. I love the fact that I painted it. One of the first ideas I got off of RC. I'll never have another dark area under my tanks again.....

The Sump is a used one I found at LFS it's 9 wide by 20 long and 18 high. I haven't bothered to figure out the total volume of the water.

At some point I am going to order a spectrapure top off and run an RO line to it which will take up a little more of the non exisitent room in the sump..... LOL

msr224,

If you go back to the link for ReefSpecialty check the menu on the left and look at the HOB skimmer line. A nother option would be to run a skimmer outside of your sump plumbed in line. You would be able to use that space where your sprite bottle is.

Excellent. I didn't see that the first time. Thanks for the info....

Now where am I gonna keep my Sprite??? hahahahaha

Seriously though I am willing to do a lil more plumbing and go inline if I can get a well designed skimmer in a configuration that works.

Initial plan is to replace with a better skimmer in the same configuration as my current setup.
