Corner Tank

Corner Tank

I have a 35 gal hexagonal corner tank. We really like the way it lights up that corner of our living room. And, we can both watch it from our favorite chairs. We love to see our little friends frolicing around the tank. It seems they play with each other at times. We have a sandsifting goby, a saltwater guppy and some soft corals. We are looking to add about 4 more fish to our tank. This is the best therapy, although the most expensive, I have found in several years.

agreed that this hobby is pricy but Oh so worth the investment in terms of how much they are enjoyed by all.

hi-welcome to the forum, have you got any pics?

No pics yet. Maybe after I get some more live rock and stock in the tank. I want to get some more soft corals, too, before posting a pic.

I just bought this saltwater guppie yesterday. The LFS said it had accidentally been acclimated to saltwater and did very well. He was the last of 12 that they had. Its black and white speckled. What do you think his chances are?

ok, no pressure, what type of corals are you thinking of getting

I'd really like to have some pulsing zenias, zoanthids(?), a brain coral, maybe an anenome that won't go and hide all the time, or anything really colorful.

I would say long term that guppy doesn't stand a chance.
They may get used to salt water and live for a short while but the odds of that guppy living its full life in a marine tank are not good.

Oh well it will help cycle the tank if nothing else!

Jesse - Any more new additions to the tank yet? I'm excited to see how you will lay out your corals. The rocks look like they are ready and willing to have tons of frags perched on all the little ledges!

Thanks for the welcome, guys. I think we've got a real challenge with a corner tank that rectangular tanks do not have. I find it harder to set up the live rock so it is displayed nicely and doesn't look staged. Do you guys have any suggestions? I've only got about 15# of rock in there and can use another 20#.

How wide/tall is your hex? I thought it was hard to rockscape this tank

but it seems like a hex would present even more of a challange to come up with something different. Maybe you could have 2 colums rising up the back sides and have a piece of branch rock or something coming from one column and crossing over the front of the other column. Kind of hard to explain, but i have an idea in my head. Good luck with that tank!

It's about 26" deep, and each side is about 12". Not very big around. I can barely reach the bottom to pick something up when I'm standing on a stool. I'm looking to find a tank that is less deep that I can manage better.

54 gal. corner

54 gal. corner

This looks good! I bought the corner tank because of space limitations. It's been challenging to scape. I started with a canister filter and soon decided I didn't like it for several reasons. I actually set up a sump in a small room BELOW the tank! My plumbing exits and enters through the wall, then through the floor. Among other reasons, I like it because it keeps the water change mess out of the living room. Currently working through an interesting problem that has been ongoing. The purple coralline algea has all but stopped, what was there looks bleached out as well as several corals have lost most of their color! I have found no hard and fast answers.

No, not adding much else till things start growing a bit. There's quite a bit of stuff in there as it is. Just quite small. I'll probably start getting the sps where I want them and get them glued in place soon.

I replaced an actinic bulb recently but the issue started before that. It's a 54 gal. corner set up as a reef with (2) 65w. PC actinics and (1) 150w. MH. I recently reduced the amonut of time the MH is on to about 5 hrs./day. The actinics are on for 10 hrs. It just looks like everything in range of the MH is fried - no coralline on the LR surfaces and colors seemingly 'bleached' out of the corals. This is a first for me.
It's been very difficult to keep the calcium above 400 mg/l, KH at or above 8 deg. dKH and MG around 1300 ppm.
