The Setup So Far

Based on what I have researched so far and learned this is how I'm gonna setup my 75g FOWLR.

46lbs Live Rock
40lbs Carib Sea Look Alive base rock

40lbs Oolite Sand
20lbs Crushed Coral
40lbs Silica Sand
Few lbs of live sand

AquaC Remora Skimmer (17.5 or 21.5 version

4x40wt 10,000k NO Flourescent bulbs.

2x200wt Visitherm Heaters

How am I doing so far, I'm trying to get as much info as I can. Do I have the filtration part down. I can't get over not using any other filtration than the rock.

You really don't need live sand if you have live rock. I am not familiar with the Carib Sea rock. Is that actual live rock? You should have at least 1.25 lbs of live rock. I'm not sure what your plan is with all of that sand. Are you doing a DSB? Also you should not go with crushed coral. Also unless you left out by mistake, you need powerheads for water movement in the tank. The lighting depends on what you plan on keeping.

The Carib-Sea rock is just base rock with highlights on it.

I just have the crushed coral laying around and thought about tossing it in. I was gonna go with 2" of sand just because that what I thought you do in marine tanks. Do I need 2" of sand or is 1" good. I havn't looked at what powerheads I want yet, thats why they're not on there. I just want to keep fish. No corals or shrimp. Is there a way to do that without a ton of live rock.

The LR and LS combo is ok. The amount of LR is good too. You should still go easy. The crushed coral WILL get dirty after a while. If you like that dark natural look over the course of time, go for it. Personally, I do. Talk to me about water movement. What are you thinking about getting?

What do you plan on keeping in the tank? The NO fluorescent lamps won't put out the same amount of light/wattage as say PC's or VHO's. So you 160W of NO light doesn't even compare to say half that in PC's or VHO's. If you want to keep anything other than zoanthids or mushrooms maybe, then you need brighter lights.

I'm thinking of 3-4 300gph powerheads attached to a coralife power center set to have 2 run for 15 min then 1-2 run for 15 min. I don't plan on having any mushroom, coral, or anything like that. I just want some nice fish. If I do anything I'll find some nice fake corals.

Also do I need to test parameters other than ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, ph, and salinity. I'm not having anything else than fish and live rock.

Coralife power centers are know for failure. I'd rethink it. I would get an Alkalinity testkit for sure. Preferably Salifert. Target 7-11dkh. In reefing, alkalinity is as important as pH in freshwater. ;)

Many great water parameter articles to read here -
