The smell of SPS ...

I have this one tricolor valida that stinks to high heaven. It really is rank. I'll have it out for a couple o' seconds and my Mum from across the room will say,

"Logan, is that purple one out of water? Put it back in."

Sorry, guys, but I don't get it - I can't stand the smell!

I was watching a rerun of Man vs Wild the other day, and Bear Grylls was stuck on a tropical island. He was saying that protection from the sun is so important, so what does he do? He goes out to the ocean, grabs a huge SPS colony and holds it upside down until it slimes, and smears the slime all over his body. Nooooooo!

I guess the slime has a natural SPS factor. Hmmm. Sunburn doesn't sound too bad.

So far, I've received 2 shipments this winter of dead acros. The last package I received was so bad, I could smell the bad odor before I opened the box! :sad2:

I smell most of my new SPS frags when I put them in the tank. Glas to see I'm not alone here, lol.

The odor certainly is unique, but it is definitely on the pungent side.

I love the acro smell, particularly on my hands, because I associate it with something I love. As I recall, I once felt the same way about darkroom chemicals and printing plants!

The smell reminds me of cleaning products. I guess its better than a lot of smells in the hobby but I cant say I like it.

Plus 2 on xeina smelling really bad. I moved out of state a few years back and brought my reef with me. All corals went into bags and into a box to be transported. The xeina died in the bag on the way. Not only that but the bag leaked out onto my car seats! It was the worst smell ever and it took a while to get it out of my car. On acros they do have distinct smell. I dont think it is a bad or a good smell. It is weird though you keep wanting to smell them lol.

I wouldn't go so far as to say they smell good, or even use the word "love" but they aren't too bad. I do hate it when I can't get the smell off my skin after I've been out in the sun all day, but it sure does beat getting sunburned that for sure!!!

Yuck...I think SPS smells like leftovers someone left in the office fridge for 8 months!

I do like the smell of the tank/sump as it smells like sea air...but SPS out of water smells rotten.
