Got my new toy in today:
Milwaukee Instruments Smart Lux Light Meter
p_26396_35987P.jpg

The level of intensity on a natural reef with clear water will average about 20,000 lux at a depth of 15 feet, and 10,000 lux at 30 feet.

in my tank on the bottom directly below a 400w 10k reeflux I'm reading 18,658 lux under my ushio which is about 5month old bulb I'm reading 16,343 lux

on the top of the tank directy under the water's surface it averages between 25,000-36,000lux with a few hot spots reaching 42,457 lux one which is on top of my birdsnest.

I'm going to write down these mesuremnets and measure each month to make sure my lamps are producing what they need too.

MakoJ,

Is the sensor water proof?

MakoJ,

Is the sensor water proof?

yup and it has a really long cord so I think it could accommodate some really deep tanks

Isn't there a holder for putting the sensor underwater without necessarily getting your hands wet ? Or were those that I saw all DIY ones ?

I haven't seen any so they must be DIY
I'll have to find out about those and make myself one.

Brian, i can make you a water proof box that you can submerge down to 60m for about $2,000.

just kidding, are you planning to chart your data in an excel sheet or something for us science dorks to analyze?

that water proof box sounds like a deal but I need it by 1pm today:D

yea I want to chart everything and use the data to help me determine when to change bulbs and at what height I should run them.

Any chance you could list the fish in the tank? Are all of them considered "reef-safe"?

Regal Angelfish
Vlamingii Tang
Purple Tang
Blue Tang
Radiant Wrasse
Bluestar Leopard Wrasse
Mystery Wrasse
Yellow Watchman Goby
Lawnmower Blenny
Horned Blenny
Alleni Damsel
Two-barred Rabbitfish
Copperband Butterfly
Black Ocellaris
Onyx Clown
Lantern Basslet
Helfrichi Firefish

Define "reef-safe"...lol. Regal Angels and Copperband's are hit and miss coral/clam munchers, the rest are pretty safe...the wrasses may eat hermits though. HTHs

took some shots tonight still haven't got to stain yet its been pretty cold here but should warm up by the weekend so I'm hoping I can but some coats on then.

Just been hanging around lurking in the background and following this great thread. Tank looks simply amazing and those pics you just posted are incredible. What a capture that was with the tang and the wrasse in the same frame....I'm sure that took more than a pics to get :) Awesome job on everything...I just keep telling myself "someday I'll have something like that"

Thanks jnarowe!

and thank you too divecj5 your right about it taking a lot of pictures to get those two next to each other lol

WOW. The whole setup looks insane. This thread really shows your dedication to the hobby. I like how you put the tank first and then the wall :D Most guys do it the other way. It came out very nice!

This setup is spectacular! I see TOTM in your future! I can't wait to see everything grow out. You guys always have sweet setups - I especially loved your wife's 75g! The pictures are awe inspiring - I can only imagine how it all must look in person! Thank you for sharing with us!

Anna :)
