hello everyone. Well i built my first stand today!! i am very impressed with myself because it is actually level... haha
it is built to hold 4 55 gallon tanks and are being used for holding tanks for myself and for a friend for when we dive and catch fish before we sell them. I think i may do a few 20 gallon tanks on one of the sides for smaller fish and to hold more water.

this was my frist attempt. It holds fine and is solid but isn't very pretty. This only holds 2 55 gallons tanks

this was my 2nd attempt. MUCH better and MUCH prettier :) lol
took me a mere 4 hours !!

I will have a sump with a ASM G4 skimmer and a return. The tanks will be drilled 3-4" below the top for surface skimming. Fish won't be in these holding tanks for more then a week, 2 tops.

thanks for looking, and ill post pics as i progress!!

My eyes could be playing tricks on me but it looks like you have about 20 or so screws in the support of a 55 gallon tank? If my memory serves me, 55 gallons of water @ 8.4 pounds per gallon is 462lbs. Plus the weight of the tank. You may want to think about supports. Just a thought.

You did redesign the first design, didn't you??? the second design looks better... I would still use 2x6's instead of 2x4's and some short ones going from front to back.. Or you could stagger the top tanks over 2 ft. and have middle support for the upper tanks.. not sure if that would work in your situation or not, just think of your safety........good luck

yeah the first design was a little off. It holds me and a friend so about 320 lbs on top. Im not worried about the bottom. I took the design from a friend who has it built the same way but 3 tanks high. So add another plat form to mine. His holds 6 55 gallons stacked 3 high using 2 x 4's. I went a little screw/nail happy for extrra support, but i am going to add a few more 2x4s on key places. But it is actually very very sturdy and strong. I'll keep you all posted.

Thank you very much for the suggestions.

just to clarify...

the top one is the first attempt. The 2x4's running the long way are not just held up by the small blocks under them. There is a 7" giant nail nailed into the sides going into them. I added the small blocks just so it had something else to help.

the bottom 2 pics are the new design. Completely different approach, and a lot better...

allenford, im not quite sure what your getting at?

i collect anything i can catch.. lol

i stay away from things i can't sell such as damsels because there just isn't a demand for them, and they dont go for much money. I also dont collect cleaner wrasses unless they are going into a very LARGE system. But i usually catch
blennies, various tangs, various wrasses, butterflies, triggers, hawks, puffers.. etc Hopefully this semester ill be catching crosshatches and flame wrasses... :)
we'll find out..

I usually sell to a LFS in my area at home (a friend runs it) but i sell to individuals as well.

I assume that you have a licence for that since is is illegal without a permit. Not calling you out or anything just making sure you are smart about it. I would love to be able to do that be here in SC the best thing I can catch is minnows and mudfish :). Do you have any pics of any you have caught?

I'd like to say that zemuron114 is a cool dude. I talked to him back and forth about some fish I was interested in and he was quick to reply back and was willing to work with me on any issues I had. I was never able to purchase any livestock from him but I've seen pics of the fish he collects, and they look really nice.

The holding tank setup looks good dude.

thanks everyone! I do have a permit.. It is a BIIIIG fine without it if you get caught.. just not worth the risk.. plus is was 50 dollars a year :)

thanks Mike! Hows the pitbull thing doing? lol

i think i may have some pics of fish, ill see if i can find them..

i'm on Oahu. I go to school at UHM and live in the Manoa area. Hopefully i can get out scubadiving more often. Im going to try and go atleast once a week.

pics soon.. i just got 2 55's and going to get them drilled

zemuron not to rag on your stand but it looks like you used treated lumber for it. If you did that is a BIG no no. Treated lumber will shrink A BUNCH over a short amount of time. Also it looks like nothing in any of those pictures are square. IMO (I'm a carpenter) that stand will fail in a short amount of time.

it is very square actually. My friend helped my build it whose father is also a carpenter for the past 40 years. I'm not to worried about it. I plan on painting it with water resistant paint stuff (i forget the name). It is very solid and can easily hold 400+ lbs on each side on top and on bottom.

Thanks for the concern. Ill keep everyone posted as i get closer to filling the tanks up.

The he should have known better not to use treated lumber ;)

weight should always be transferred to the floor through another weight bearing support, 2x4 for instance, not through a screw or nail. Can you fill in the space betwen the cleat supporting the platform and the next platform/floor with another 2x4?
