the current bulb mix that i am using and not loving is

2 powerchrome midday
2 ati aqua blue special
1 fiji purple
3 ati blue plus special...

what should i change to make this ideal?? cant describe what i dont like about it but it doesnt feel wow...

Drop the Aquablues for 2 more Blue Plus and see what you think. Thebn maybe try an Aquablue in place of a midday.

Grim,

Thank you for helping me out a few weeks ago on bulb selection. I went with an ati 36" PM with the following bulb you suggested:

Front to back:

ati aquablue
ati blue plus
UVL actinic white
GE 6500k daylight
ati blue plus
ati blue plus

The color is nice, but a little to white for my taste. I like the color of a 14k MH. What do you think i should change out to get the color i like? Also, since i'm ordering some new T5...might as well get a few more bulbs to try, what other one should i try.

Thanks

Get another Blue Plus and put it in where the Aquablue is. You could try pulling the GE and putting the Aquablue in there if the additional Blue Plus doesn't get you what you want.

So I recently started helping out at a LFS here in Utah. I got the guy who owns it hooked on T5's.

He started a wholesale account at Reefgeek and I get his prices on everything from them. So that has made it possible for me to set up my 40 gallon, FINALLY!

I want to keep SPS up top and LPS on the bottom. I can't have more than 150 PAR at the bottom of my tank. My thought was to go with the ATI Sunpower in the 6x24W version. That way I can keep it like 6" off the water and spread the light out a little bit. It will also allow me to keep my LPS on the out skirts of the lighting so they don't get fried.

My thoughts on bulbs are:

ATI BP
UVL SA
KZ Fiji Purple
ATI BP
UVL SA
ATI Aquablue

Maybe switch number 4 and 6. Do you think it would be enough PAR to keep SPS and clams under the lamps and also provide a nice bright 14k look?

Thanks Master Grim!

That should be about where you want to be on a 40 I would think. I would grab a spare Blue Plus just in case. Might want to throw one in place of one of the SA's.

What you have would be fine for SPS on the rock assuming the tank isn't too tall, not over 24". Not much of a difference adding another Aquablue. I would try to keep the light 4 to 6 inches above the tank.

Thanks Grim!

I am looking for a 48" 4 or 6 X 54 mount on tank T5 fixture that is no wider than 10". I found a few fixtures that will work and was hoping to get a little feed back on them. I know the TX5 would be the best choice but it is a little out of my budget. My tank is 16" from top to top of sand bed and I would like to stock the tank with LPS, a few SPS and maybe a clam.

Here are a few that I found

1. Catalina - I can get this fixture in a four or six buld with moon lights and the width is 8.25". The 6 bulb runs around $330 and the four bulb runs $220.

2. Giesemann Reflexx - These comes in a 4X54 config. and looks like the TX5.

3. Wave Point T5 - The 4X54 measures only 8.25" wide.

4. Aquaticlife 4x54 T5 - When I talked to a rep at Marine Depot he claimed this fixture was a little over 9", but when I opened up the manual I found that the width measurement was 10.14". If the manual is correct this fixture will not work.

Most all the reviews I read are good on all four of these fixtures. I am just looking for a little help so I make the correct purchase. If there is a fixture that I over looked that will work and is better that the fixtures listed above I would like to hear about it.

How about the Nova Sundial?

Is the Sundial a better fixture than the ones I have listed? If so why would you pick that one over the rest?

Thanks Grim

Hey Grim,

I'm looking to get a new light for my mixed reef Solana. (Mostly LPS on the bottom/mid, and some SPS on the mid/top.

Do you think a 4 bulb Tek will be sufficient? I have ATI bulbs from a MH/T5 combo fixture already.

Or, will the 20inch 6x18 watt NEP be a better choice?

Thanks much!

Eric

I have the NEP on my solana, Its great for the money, the only downside is that it doesnt have a large bulb selecion, just 10k and 460nm actinic.

Im eventualy upgrade to a 6x24 ATI powermodule, not because the NEP isnt strong enough, its because the color on the corals doesnt pop out do to the lack of bulb choices on the 20" NEP

It has individual reflectors and cooling, neither of which are great but better than what the stuff you listed has as far as I know.

I would do the TEK.

Grim,

I have 6 x 54 watt T5 Reef Geek reflectors on 3 triads currently on a 75 gallon with 3 Blue Plus, 1 UVL Actinic White, 1 ATI Aquablue Special, and an ATI Sun Pro. I am thinking about upgrading to a 150 gallon tank that is 60" x 24 " x 24".

I have some old Tek reflectors (retro from Reef Geek), another Ice Cap 660 ballast, and a spare 75/24 UVL and an ATI Blue Plus. How would someone upgrade these lights to be used on a 150 gallon 60" x 24 " x 24" quarium? Should I get another 660 Ice cap ballast so I can go with 8 x overdriven 48 inch T5's.

Or should I set up 6 x 80 watt 60 inch T5's with a couple 48 inch T5's for dusk dawn? The problem with this option is that it is a lot of money. I am not wanting to spend a lot on lights right now if possible. I want to have a mixture of Fish, LPS and SPS.

Thanks in advance for you advice.

I would use the Ice Cap to run 4 lamps in reefgeek reflectors and use the Triads to run the other 4 lamps. Overdrive the 4 center lamps on the Ice Cap.

Hey Grim,

What kind of look (spectrum) do these configs give:

A -- 4 Blue plus, 1 GE 6500k, and 1 UVL actinic white
B -- 4 Blue plus, 1 Aquablue, and 1 UVL Actinic white
C -- 3 Blue plus, 1 GE 6500k, 1 Aquablue, 1 UVL Act. White

Would Config B slow down growth alot compared to A?

Thanks for your help!!

Hi Grim, you do great work here no doubt 1000's have benefitted from your advice!

My question is regarding supplementation of my 2x250w phoenix 14k de on hqi ballasts. Fixture also has 2x24w pc actinics but they don't make that much impact.

I am adding a 2x54w aquamedic sunbeam to supplement. I want more fluorescence/ actinic, little better colours... could probably do with a hint more blue but not much.

Considering the G'man and ATI pure actinics and blue plus / actinic +.. the UVL super actinic, and the fiji purple as some options.

Any reccomendations to really blow up the colours in my setup? Good PAR would be nice but not the main priority given the hqi's...of course I do want to notice the difference though so bright bulbs not washed out by my mh would be nice.

Thanks in advance

All three are going to be around 14K with C being slightly less blue and B slightly more blue. Not a hill of beans difference in PAR between the 3.

One actinic and one Blue lamp of either brand would get you what you want. The ATI Actinic will get you a little more blue light. The Blue Plus and Actinic Plus lamps will be very close as far as looks go.

Grim. Whats the difference besides par between a blue bulb and an actinic? Basic question but I really dont know.
