The T5 Q&a Thread

Wow,

What a thread. I have been reading for hours and was unable to find a recommendation for my set up. My tank is a 75 and my fixture is the Nova Current Extreme. 4 x 54 watts. I know this is on the light side and an upgrade will be coming. In the mean time I am going to replace my bulbs. I am currently using the bulbs that it came with. Grim, I noticed you mentioned replacing these bulbs that come with it.

I just plan on keeping soft corals, maybe some lps but not sps for now anyway. Could you please recommend a 4 bulb configuration and what position they should be?

Front
ATI Blue Plus
UVL Actinic White
ATI Blue Plus
ATI Aquablue

Might have to tweak the positions to get the blues on the dusk/dawn pair. SHould be fine for LPS up on the rocks a little, even monti SPS up high directly under the lamps.

The shop just ran out of Actinic Plus's...what would be a comparible replacement? Gman AquaBlue + or UVL 75.25 or Aqua Science 15000K or KZ Fiji Purple?

None of those will work as replacements. The Actinic Plus is a blue bulb. The Aquablue is white with a hint of blue, the 75/25 is purple, the Aqua Science should only be slighter bluer than the Aquablue and the Fiji Purple is definitely not blue.

I would look to order online if possible or have your shop get more Actinic Pluses in soon.

Thanks for the reply GrimReefer. I would have the 2 Aquablue Plus on the dawn/dusk pair? Also, where is a good place to get the ATI bulbs?
 
best 48" T5 fixture with legs to mount on tank

best 48" T5 fixture with legs to mount on tank

I am looking for a 48" T5 unit, but really would rather have a fixture with legs instead of having to hang from ceiling. Looking in the $500-600 price range.
I see the TEK unit has optional feet, are they any good?
Also could swing the ATI Sunpower unit, but doesn't look like this unit has any way to mount other than suspending from ceiling. Is this correct?

Aqua Science 22000K blue would be the same if they have them. If not just order ATI Blue Pluses on line from reefgeek.
 
oops I made a mistake there...
Would any of the following bulbs be able to replace/same as the suggested Actinic White?
Gman AquaBlue + or UVL 75.25 or Aqua Science 15000K or KZ Fiji Purple

And speaking of similar bulbs...which would be most similar to:
ATI Blue Plus
ATI Aqua Blue Special
AquaScience Blue 22k

from the Gman, URI, or KZ line of bulbs?

or does someone have a simple link to a comparable bulb list?

Ya I'm a Canuck so I cna't order from reefgeek or American sites....would end up costing $60 a bulb.

hey grim what bulb combo would you suggest front to back for a 65 g 36x18x24tall its a mixed reef more lps the fixture is tek 6x 39 watt thanks in advance

Blue Plus Actinic Plus AS 22000K blue are the same color

Aquablue from ATI or Gieseman and Duo and special from Aqua Science are ablut the same, The AS Duo is bluer, their special is more white.

Look at the Aquactinics stuff, I believe they have legs. Tek is fine but don't use a slash shield on it. The ATI doesn't have legs so you have to get creative to sit it on a tank. I just sat mine on the cross braces.

grim i need help here was going to go with the combo you suggest wit hte ati/uv/ge mix but my LFS only sells uv and giesseman, is there a 4 bulb combo you can suggest with these? i was thinking 2xaquablue+ 1xuvlwhite actininc, but im not sure what to use in stead of the ge 6500k, or where i can find that bulb, thanks alotwhen i get my addintional 2 bulb retro i should add one more uvl AW and one more giess. right? thanks

Well just set up yesterday my ATI sunpower 6x54... Its BRIGHT and sexy.

Im looking for a 20k to 22k look and my current bulb combo is giving me somewhere between a 14k to a 20k.

Got from front to back

ATI Blue Plus
UVL Super Actinic (dawn and dusk)
Fiji Purple
ATI Blue Plus
UVL 75/25 (Dawn and dusk)
UVL Super Actinic

That is my 6 Bulb combo, I got and extra ATI Blue Plus bulb I could trow into the mix, which bulb should I replace in order to get more flourescence?
