The T5 Q&a Thread

Midday will work but I would think about ordering ATI lamps, a lot less money than KZ. If you order from Reefgeek get 6 Blue Plus, 2 Purple Plus and 2 GE 6500K's.

Hi TGR!

I was wondering about the Purple Plus from ATI. How is this bulb compared to the Fiji Purple from KZ? Do you have any PAR readings?

Just wondering why the Fiji Purple is so popular, when thinking about the price. What about Aquapink from Giesemann? Is that bad compared to Fiji Purple.

Thanks,
Ken.

The ATI and Fiji are close. Dunno about the Gmann.

Hello,

I'm new to the T5 world and revitalizing my tank here shortly....I'm currently running strictly PC's now, and have a few softies and lps in there....tank dimensions are 180 gal. 96Lx18Dx24H. Would I need a 6 bulb or 8 bulb setup? This thing would not be in a canopy, but I can DIY a lighting rack of some sort to hang over the tank. Would a couple of the LET Miro-4 retro kits work for this? Is there a better kit out there to use? What bulb combination would you recommend?

Thanks in advanced for your help!

I think it would be nice if people posted a pic of different combos so others could "see" what they look like...or is there a thread somewhere?

LET's are fine. 4 Blue Plus, 1 Purple Plus and a GE 6500K daylight.

If 10 people take a picture of the same tank you are going to get 10 different versions of what the light looks like. It would take a single person to go around with the same camera taking pictures of different mixes for it to do any good.

Hey Grim, thanks for the response. Since I'm looking at replacing my PC's now, there a ton of info on LED's. Is that like the next best thing out there? Should I look at LED's instead of T5's or whats the scoop on LED's v T5's? I've tried reading all the different threads, but still feel pretty ignorant with the wealth of info on these things...:crazy1:

If you are comfortable doing DIY LED's. If not T5's. I haven't seen an LED fixture with a mix of colors I like. I'd at least want Neutral whites with Royal blues. I use 3 different whites in mine.

Not to mention that the person taking the pictures better be pretty darn good with a camera. Even the slightest background light can throw a camera off enough to change the look.

Not a single one of my pictures has ever turned out looking like real life and I have borrowed some pretty expensive cameras from my film editing neighbor. Even photshopping the pictures makes them look off a little bit.

Do you have a good DIY LED build thread you'd recommend? Just trying to do as much research before I drop the cash.

Thanks!

Hey grim,
About 6 mos ago I purchased a used powermodule that came with new bulbs. I hate the bulbs that it came with and to be honest I don't know how I've put up with it for this long. The bulb combo I currently have is: (front to back)
ATI aquablue special
ATI aquablue special
ATI blue plus
ATI pro color
GE ecolux
GE ecolux
ATI blue plus
ATI blue plus
ATI pro color
ATI aquablue special

I have been in a tossup as to weather or not to back to halides. I recently saw a friends tank with radiums with led suppliments. That is what I'd like to shoot for, a solid 20k look, what I have currently is way too yellow. I have ran figi purple before as a supplement to halides along with blue plus. I really liked the figi purple, so if you could include something like that that'd be great.
thanks in advance!

Yes the bulbs will be super yellow but the way they are placed doesn't help the matter. You have everything clumped together. Aquablue's should never go in front like that and you don't want to stack like bulbs together. For example, the 2 GE 6500k bulbs. The Pro Colors are a waste as well. ATI discontinued those and went to the Purple Plus. The Purple Plus is a much better bulb overall.

For now I would rearrange the bulbs and order new ones.

Try to get a blue up front and in the fourth slot. Separate the GE's and Aquablues out so they aren't clumped together.

For the new bulbs I would go with 7 ATI Blue Plus, 2 ATI Purple Plus and 1 GE 6500k. Get an extra Blue Plus to play with as well.

Again, keep a blue in front, a purple front and rear of center and the GE close to center. The other slots will all be filled with blue bulbs.

planning on a macro tank. 36" l x 24" w x and it is 25" deep. i have a 36" -4 bulb t5 fixture. and would like suggestions for lighting various macros. (not sure what macros i will get)
cheers.

I would try something like 2 ATI Aquablue, 1 ATI Purple Plus and 1 GE 6500k.

When I had a planted PW tank I ran the above combo but used a Giesemann AquaFlora instead of the Purple Plus. It was more pink but I think there is plenty of red in the Purple Plus still.

thanks rtparty! now im thinking should this be enough light? or would i need more?
:worried:
