Grim, what was the par of the purple plus? I have seen the fiji purples par range from 300-345 on various test? Also do you remeber where the spikes were in the red spectrum 600nm-700nm and if they were significant or subtle compared to a normal day light bulb light an ati aqua blue?
 
splash guard like a thin acrylic inside the canopy? will it hurt light going through the tank, if I want sps , clams etc. 90 gallon 48 x 24x18 lights would be what u recommended 6 bulb (ice cap 660 4 bulb and sunlight "tek" 2 bulb) thanks!
 
hi,i'm wondering if you can give me a bulb line-up for 12x54w tek lighting (6x54wx2 fixtures) maybe even a description of the bulbs?

i am kinda lost because i haven't put much effort in taking note of what i like when i see it,i definately don't like a very blue tank...looking for growth no matter the color,within reason,actinic isn't a 'grow' bulb? i plan on running true daylight for 6-7 hours with dusk/dawn light 2-3 hours on each side of daylight
i described what i like to a vendor and he made me a short list of bulb choices,they are

Current True Lume
T-5 German Aqua (??)
Spectralux
Pure Actinic 4

i have no idea about these bulbs except i did read that the pure actinic is more of a purple,fair?...i'll be digging in more tonight

very open to advice!!

6 ATI Blue Plus, 4 ATI Aquablue and 2 ATI Purple Plus.

I have no idea what those bulbs are that a vendor recommended but I wouldn't use them. Stick with good name stuff. ATI, Giesemann, KZ and UVL. I prefer ATI myself.
 
Using reflectors?

Just friday I went and installed new lamps in a friend's 4 lamp Ice Cap rig over a 75, 2 ATI Blue Plus, 2 ATI Purple Plus which are about as bright as an aquablue. Pulling off PAR of 281 at the sandbed and looks plenty bright to me. Could be the missing shimmers that you are jonesing for. It shouldn't look dark unless there is a ballast problem or something. If you had a 10K halide try this

Blue Plus
Fiji Purple
GE 6500K Daylight
Blue Plus

Probably will look a little closer to what you are used to. More white with a hint of blue.

Thanks for the response......yes I have the individual ice cap reflectors. I'm happy with the colors with 2 blue specials, fiji purple, & a blue plus. I'm sure there's plenty of par, I just wasn't happy with the view of detail with the overall dimness. It's something I'll just have to adjust my tastes on after using 400w bulbs with lumenarc reflectors, which was obviously overkill for my 24" deep tank.

I've used the GE before & that added too much yellow, but maybe I'll experiment some with my old GE bulb.

Hello I have a 90gal tank, basically a FOWLR tank right now but just purchased a different light setup and want to start getting a few corals, just going to start with some mushrooms and stuff like that. I have a 6 bulb T5HO fixture and am looking for ideas on light configuration. I am new to the hobby and dont totally understand all the differences in the light colors and stuff yet. Thank you, any info would be greatly appreciated.

The cool white LED's are about the color of an Aquablue T5, wont take much blue to wash them out.

The Purple read right about the same as the blue plus. Accounting for the under reporting of blue light and over of red I'd guess the Purple would be a bit lower but not bad.

The spectrometer I use isn't great for trying to isolate exact spikes but there was a good amount of output into the deep red spectrum,

Just keep it clean and make sure you have plenty of airflow to keep the lamps cool.

Grab a GE and Aquablue for spares so you can play around with the mix.

GE will be white with a little yellow, purple plus will be white with a little purple, aquablue will be white with a little blue. Blue Plus is very blue with very high par, will fluoresce corals very well.

Purple Plus and the Fiji are about the same thing. I think I personally would prefer your bottom mix to 2 purples.

Depending on the brand of your light fixture you can have plenty of light for anything or enough for softies and LPS.

For lamps ATI 4 Blue Plus 1 ATI Purple Plus and a ATI Aquablue should be good.
