The T5 Q&a Thread

Just ordered a 265 gallon tank (7'x2'x30") Are T5's feasible to use on something this deep? how many and what setup would you guys run?

I want to be able to keep anything I want

I would say 2 ATI Sunpowers in the 8x39w version at a minimum. For bulbs go with 5 ati blue plus, 2 ati purple plus and 1 ge 6500k for each fixture.

In all honesty you are probably better off going with at least 3 - 250w MH or all LED. 16 bulbs a year to replace will run you over $350.

New Recomendation

Thanks again for the recommendations about a year ago it worked out great.

I have currently an ATI Powermodule running 4 Blue Plus, 1 Purple Plus and 1 6500.

I have coral wise some green ricordias, star polyps, Whammin Watermelon Zoos (Red Center, Green outside), A purple/blue crocea clam, Red goniporra, yellow leather, and Ultra bleeding Apple Scoylmia (Aussie Doughnut).

I really want the gonipora, clam and scoylia to shine, they are red, light green, and purple. Can you recommend a new lighting combo or stay the same?

Thanks again

You could try replacing the 6500 with another ati purple plus and see what you think. Your combo is one of the better ones so I would stick with it.

hey rtparty
if i run a daylight vho with a superactinic would that ruin the 6t5 combo

I have always been MH, but I would like a closed canopy and not sure how the heat buildup would be with metal halides this time. I currently have the TEK Maristar fixture over a 120g and love the MH look, just not sure how it would work inside a closed canopy

Because your PAR meter will under read the blue in a blue plus and over read the red in the aquablue. Sanjay Joshi used a hella expensive light meter when he tested his bulbs and found the blue plus was the highest PAR. A guy posted the info about it but it was like 10 splits ago at this point!

On my 40g breeder I was above 300 PAR on the sand. Are your fans set to the correct speed? Should be set at either 7.5v or 9v and all label ends of the bulbs should be on the cord side of the fixture. I had to keep my fixture at least 8" off the surface.

Really? I'm using the apogee meter. I will try moving it up 6" from the surface.

6x39w 36" tek light.

What bulbs do I need to go with and in what order. Current bulbs are:

Giesemann Actinic +
ATI Blue + x2
UVL AquaSun
Giesemann Midday 6000K
KZ Fiji Purple

These are about 6 months old so they do not have to be replaced now but I am looking for the best combo that will support LPS and softies. I may add some SPS high in the tank in the future...............

Classic 6 bulb combo will work here.

4 ati blue plus, 1 ati purple plus and 1 ge 6500k

What bulbs are you running again? What are your fans set at? How old are the bulbs and have they been properly cooled the whole time?

Yes, the apogee meters under read the blues and over read reds.

You could run an actinic white on one of the vho's and a super actinic on the other.

Depends on the fixture. A good fixture will light up to 60" but the last 6" on each side will be pretty dark. I wouldn't try any corals in that part.

I'm ok with that. I currently have a 48" LET retro over a 90g and am thinking about upgrading to a 135g. If I can get away with that light for a while as I save up I'll be more likely able to make the upgrade.

If you're okay with it, that's all that matters.

In this case you could try staggering the bulbs a bit. Like stagger the bulbs out to 60" if that makes sense. Don't go all the way to 72" or you will lose a ton of light in the middle.
