Grim, Great tread!
Before I go out and buy my new lights I just wanted to get one more opinion. My tank: 55g, 48Lx13Wx18D. I am debating on the Tek5 4x54 or 6x54. I am looking to go SPS/LPS and possibly a clam. The main problem I have with the 6b is it is 15"w and my tank is only 13"w (and the 4b is cheaper). I do not have a hood and I am not going to hang it from the ceiling. I will have to buy the braces to set it on the tank. Any thoughts?

Grim, i have a question similer to geoff72's. on a 90g, 48"x18"x24", could i keep SPS and clams. would a 6x54 watt tek light fixture(individual reflectors) be enough? sorry if you've heard this question 800 times

I have a question that I dont know if it has been answered or not. Sorry if it has. This has to do with 54W bulbs, Icecap ballasts and reflectors.

7 bulb Sunlight Supply reflectors or 6 bulb Icecap reflectors??? Right now I have 7 Sunlight Supply and thinking of switching to Icecap. Since they are bigger I cant fit 7 of them over my 75G, only 6...

Good reflectors, sits right on the tank so you get better penetration and 5 lamps.

A standard Tek light fixture will work but you need to keep the higher light stuff up on the rocks.

Save your money, it would be a wash.

Good idea. WIll I be able to keep most corals in this?

You would probably want to run a couple of actinic lamps just so you don't melt stuff. That would be really bright over a 55. I'd probably run a Sun, 2 blue plus and 2 actinic lamps in that system. The nice thing would be if you ever move to a taller tank that fixture will give you enough light if you change the lamp mix.

Thanks a lot. I think I might go with that one.

Is there a certain order?

I have a 30 gal like you all delight. I have the 4 bulb tek light and I can grow anything. I have a blue acro going nuts on the bottom of the tank.

Where can I get it?

I keep LPS and softies. No SPS

Best price you will find is at Reefgeek.com

http://www.reefgeek.com/products/categories/lighting/104188.html
And it even has 2 Daylight lamps.

If no SPS you could go with this: http://www.drsfostersmith.com/Product/Prod_Display.cfm?pcatid=12772&N=2004+113175
a little cheaper and has lamps. No individual reflectors which means not as light transfers to the aquarium.

But we all start with softies only and eventually end up with SPS.

Grim,

Thanks for all the info. With the quote above, if I only want to keep mostly softies and lps would that be too much light? I do want to have some easier sps up on the rocks but my concern is for the softies. So a clam on the sandbed is not going to happen with this fixture, is that correct?

With what I want, would the aquatinic fixture be more suitable for me? But with this a clam would not work anywhere?

THanks again!!

seedsetc.com has pretty good prices on tek lighting.... less than some others and ground shipping was only 3.50. i ended up buying my bulbs from reefgeek.com as they had a better selection, but add tax (i am in ca) and shipping (somewhere around 35 bucks).... and it was easy to go with seedsetc.com.... i saved around 80 bucks. true that i missed out on the three free daylight bulbs.

What's the opinion of putting 48" bulbs over a 60" tank? I kind of what the room on the side to install some fans, and i'm not interested in stocking the tank to the brim. Has anyone done this, or are there some obvious drawbacks that i am just not seeing? I am custom building the hood, so being able to install a retrofit will be no issue. Thanks!
