I removed the plastic. It's colored like that from the flash on the camera. It's the only way I could've gotten the blemishes to show up. Any way to get them out?

No, just clean them best you can. I am not sure how much they will really hurt the performance.

My only worry with this type of fixture is the light spillage -my husband has a low tolerance if he has to "compete" with a widescreen t.v. When set-up so close to the water, I'll have to figure out how to get them out of the way when working on the tank.
I wonder if ATI and Aquactinics lights are tension controlled with the suspension cables ? That's important for me when choosing a system, so it's easy to get in the tank.

No, they are just regular type hangers but the ones with the tensioners would probably work on them. You can contact Aquactinics direct and ask them about it.
 
Recommendations for a new setup

tank is 60Lx18WX24H

Should I go 4x54 or 6x54
stagger or centered?

The rock will be an island in the cneter with clear space on the ends so centered might work..

or try the 80w 60" bulbs?
That would require new ballasts or can I run a single 80 from a 2x54w ballast wired together?
 
Ok, I give up my personal search -- do you have an online source for UVL 80w bulbs? Reefgeek doesn't seem to carry them. They have ATI, but not UVL.

Reflectors in the TX5 fixtures?

Has anyone measured the PAR difference between the Icecap SLR used in the Solarflare and the reflectors used in the Aquatinics TX5 fixtures?

I really need a 36" fixture, but don't know if I can wait as long as it takes to get an ATI fixture.

Any links or threads someone can direct me to?

So, I was looking and thinking, and looking and thinking and contemplating my truly limited budget and I found these...

I cant afford the icecap versions. Maybe someday I can upgrade to Icecap, but it just isnt happening now.

I was thinking 175watt to help me achieve my dream of high and lower light specimens. Does this sound feasible?

Pulse over probe start right? And then I have to find pulse start bulbs?

i was thinking T5's, which we talked about, but I can save by dismantling my coralife aqualight PC's and using them with a retro kit. I also already had current separate moonlights.

I have a friend who has an aquatraders electronic version 36" 1x250 2x96 compacts and I have to tell you, after a couple of years of use I cant see why people hate them so much. I've been inside it and no less in workmanship than my aqualight, which carries quite a commanding price tag naturally, but then i dont know much about ballasts I can only go by the tank. So that was my original first choice, to sell my aqualight and this 2x55 PC retro kit I have, but I figured since i have a good deal of a system, well...

48" lamps centered will work. My tank is about the same deminsions as yours and with the 48" fixture sitting right on the tank frame and you hardly notice the difference in the light. At the bottom there is plenty of light to grow most critters.

If your interested I have a Fauna Marin Ultra Solaris 6x54 unit with about 6 months use on it I'll sell you. It isn't cheap but a good deal. It is a complete fixture but it needs to be in a canopy or in wall. It is almost as intense as the Aquactinics Constellation. PM me if you are interested.

UVL Doesn't make 80 watt lamps.

The reflectors are good but in the 36 inch unit they have to se Workhorse ballasts so that hurts the performance a bit.

I tested 3 fixtures with the same 4 lamps, all 36"

Powermodule 302
Tx5 194
Tek 152

I really can't explain why the ATI is so much higher except the cooling must be more effective and the ballasts are better

The difference is the Aquatraders is if your purchase arrives damaged, has a warranty isse etc. you are in for a real treat.

If you stick with electronic ballasts you don't have to worry about Pulse vs. Probe.

I cant really seem to find electronics in a price I can handle. Just those pulse and probe kits. I think I'll either have to make the plunge, something will come up to save in the selling thread between here and denver, or I'll have to just stick with the PC's and forego anything high light...

i suppose it isnt the hobby for people on budgets, but it is what it is, and I'm already in. Mostly I was in a hurry and cant save because I got some high light animals dropped on me when a friend left town... In paticular a galaxea and this green monti. i cant take them to the local store because they dont even have high light. I'm sort of in a bind. Thanks though Grim you have been fantastic and i appreciate all your help.

What would your bulb choices be for a 48"x18"x21" tank with a 4 x 54w t5s with the HO ballast from reefgeek (but not the icecap) and 2 x 110 VHOs that will be purely actinic supplementation?

Do you think that configuration is capable of keeping a clam and sps healthy?

Check the local club forums for deals or post up a thread that your looking. You can keep the couple high light critters you have if you get them up on the rocks and change your PC lamps at 6 months.

Sorry, must have missed the fact you were doing 80's.

ATI has a good 80 watt actinic. GE daylight or Giesemann midday for the Aquasuns
