Need Advice.

Upgrading from 4x54W T-5 and 2x175W 20MH to an
48" 8 bulb ATI Powermodule.
When I switch over should I use my existing 4 T5 bulbs and 4 older ones. And gradually swap them out for new bulbs. Or existing 4 bulbs and 4 new ones, or all 8 new bulbs an use screen over the top of the tank.
Also what about photo period? I was running the 4 T'5 12 hours and the MH's 5 hours.

Go with the same 12 hour dusk/dawn period.

The 4 current and 4 new lamp Idea sounds good. I'd start the midday period at about 2 hours and increase it an hour a week until you are where you want to be. Then I would add a new lamp a week until you have replace those other 4 lamps.

This is an insanely large thread, so my apologies if this has already been answered. I'm setting up a 40B and I plan to go all SPS. Would 4 x 39w be enough for them? I'm doing a retrofit with nice reflectors and bulbs (wouldn't mind a recommendation on bulb combo) but my real question is what ballast or ballasts should I use? Would a Workhorse 7 be good or should I go with two smaller ones? I would like to do a dawn/dusk but it's not a deal breaker.

Stick with real T5 ballasts. 4 lamps will work but 6 gives you a more versatile mix of lamps

Front
ATI Blue Plus
UVL 75/25
GE 6500K Daylight
ATI Blue Plus

So whats a real T5 ballast?

A ballast that meets the lamp manufacturers design specifications.

Triad, Advanced, DYnamic, VS/Osram/Sylvania are the brands I can think of.

6x39W with Reefgeek reflectors. Normally driven with the Universal or Vossloh Schwabe ballasts.

As for bulbs:

ATI Blue Plus
UVL 75/25
ATI Blue Plus
UVL Aquasun
ATI Blue Plus
ATI Aquablue

or

4x39W with Reefgeek reflectors. Driven by 2 IceCap 660's to overdrive them.

Bulbs:

ATI Blue Plus
UVL 75/25
GE 6500K or ATI Aquablue
ATI Blue Plus

Hi Grim,

I'm running a setup that you suggested to me a while back and I'm pretty happy with it, but I'm looking for a little more "pop" in the coloration of corals.

I currently have:

(Front)
UVL Super Actinic
ATI Blueplus
UVL Aquasun
ATI Blueplus
UVL Aquablue
ATI Blueplus

Any suggestions? Thanks!

Oh, you mean that a workhorse isn't a ballast designed for T5? Sorry, what do you recommend other than Icecap?

Workhorse claims they are but the companies that designed T5 lamps designed them with certain features the Workhorse lacks.

The brands I listed above are all good.

VS and Triad are the most common I think. VS Osram and Sylvania are all the same ballast.

Try a UVL 75/25 instead of the Super actinic and GE 6500K Daylight instead of the Aquasun. CHange your positions so the front lamp is a Blue Plus.

So it should be:

(Front)
ATI Blueplus
UVL Aquablue
GE 6500k
ATI Blueplus
UVL Aquablue
ATI Blueplus

?

Thanks for the help!

ATI Blue Plus
UVL 75/25

Halides to t5

Halides to t5

I am going from 3-250 hamilton halides to 8 reto tek lights in 60" because of the heat build up in my tank even with lots of fans. The lights are in a hood with the top open but with the fans i go through about 20 plus gal a week. The tank is 68x24x24 and even though i have a chiller i dont want it to run all the time. I live in Canada and there is only 1 dealer in 60" bulbs and all he sells is giesemann. I am getting 2 midday, 3 aquablue, 2 true actinics, 1 actinics plus. Can you suggest a order from front to back and what lights should start in the morning than afternoon than the evening along with run times. Should the 1and3 lights be on one ballast and 2 and 6 be on another? I am verry new to the t5 game and going through your site comments i cant find this answer. The bulb choice is by my supplier because i like my 14000k hamiltons, what so you think. Only giesemann rember.

Any diagrams on how to mount azoo fan to tek fixture?

If for $20 I can gain a 20% increase in output, great.

Thanks

No diagram, just clamp it to the rear frame of the tank right in the middle. you want the airstream striking the rear edge of the fixture rather than the lamps/. Having the fan higher than the fixture so it blows down slightly onto the top works really well. You just want the fan to cause slight air movement across the lamps. Having the air hit the fixture prevents it from over cooling the lamps but helps cool the ballasts.

. I am getting 2 midday, 3 aquablue, 2 true actinics, 1 actinics plus...

This is going to be really, really WHITE, and washed out...! It will look very 10K, maybe even 6500K. I highly recommend, if you want good coral colors, to get some more Actinic+'s in thereâ€"like at least 3 bulbs, and personally I would use 4 Actinic+'s...

I like rtparty's array, but would put an Aquablue more near the center, and a midday in the back...

If you are running an actinic turn that and a Blue Plus on first. When you are ramping up lights add as many blues/actinics as possible before adding in the "white" lamps.
