Offering any further details on the elves and gnome would violate the UA. I would like to know how the footprints got on the ceiling though

That would be the pixies. I will say no more, the UA is very specific on that.

This is the equipment forum, a Man's forum. There will be no talk of Pixies here, you have to go hang out in the Mushroom forum if you want to see pixies.

You having more than the SUper Actinics fail?

yes 1 uvl daylight 1 uvl actinic

all other bulbs seem fine.. ill run a par meter across the brace of the tank again to day to see if i see any change in any other bulbs

I have a 8 bulb nova extreme t5ho fixture 48" it has one large reflector. I have this on my 75g I am trying to run lps sps and a couple clams. Right now I have 4-10k's and 4- 460 nm actinic and its about time to look at new bulbs these are about 8 months in.

What would be a good set up for this fixture and my needs?
Where is the best place to buy the bulbs?
There is alot to read in this thread and i am still working on it where can I learn more about these bulbs and lights?

Hey Grim and Gang,

I've been reading and reading and reading this thread until my eyes crossed :) I think I have made some headway in understand bulbs and brands.

I have a 48x18x20 75g mixed reef that I am looking to be predominantly SPS, potentially a clam. I didn't have all that much cash to get a top of the line light but am looking to make what I have work.

I currently have a Marineland Deluxe T5 fixture that came with 2-6500k daylights and two "actinics" that they quote as being 8500K (does not make sense to me....but they are blue, not Actinic purple). I also have two 10,000K daylight white bulbs and one UVL 75/25.

I am going to add a Tek retro kit to add 2 more bulbs one on each side of the Marineland fixture. I am looking at bulkreefsupply.com where I can chose bulbs between Giesemann and UVL. I am looking to get a look around 15,000K look with more pop from the corals and fish without looking totally blue.

I retrofitted the ML fixture with another power cord so I will be able to have 3 controllable banks (front/back, 1st/3rd bulbs, 2nd/4th bulbs). I was thinking of either getting two Giesmann Powerchrome Actinic Plus's (I think are comparable to the ATI Blue + right?) or on Actinic Plus and on Giesemann Pure Actinic.

Plan is to go with this setup. The numbers in parenthesis are the pairs and when they would be turned on in the light cycle.

Front to Back
Giesemann Actinic Plus (1)
UVL 75/25 (2)
10,000K Daylight White (3)
Giesemann Actinic Plus or Pure Actinic (2)
6500K Daylight or another 10,000K Daylight White (3)
Marineland Blue bulb (1)

Thoughts?

Sounds good, Brian, should be what you wantâ€"not too blue, but not too white... But with only 6 bulbs, and wanting to keep SPS, I consider a pure actinic bulb a luxury you can't afford. I would definatly run an Actinic+ in the 4th position and not the Pure Actinic. Play around with the 6500K and 10K bulbsâ€"you may be a 6500K fan and can take the color wash out (but yellows in particular will look good), I am not, and much prefer the more blueish white bulbs (Aquablue Special for instance). It's good that you already have the bulbs and can play around with themâ€"saves the bucks, that's for sure...

Hey Todd,

Much appreciated! Its hard to see the effects in person and most of the people I know are running MH and I look to be one of the few T5 guinea pigs in the area that I know of. I was thinkinng the two Actinic Plus's but wavered just before I posted and got the answer I was looking for.

I was reading about the 3000K GE's some people enlist for those oranges and reds and figured the 6500K might add those hues I am looking for. Right now I enjoy the bright blue/white I have but my corals are definitely muted. You know you need a fix when your GSP look dingy, especially when they glow under blues so well. Its the good thing about T5s is you can play with the bulbs. Plan is also to add a Pro Color or Fiji Purple in the mix at some time.

Just a PITA to let them ranp up to optimal operating temp, then have to cool them a bit and repeat...then having to try and remember which is better!

I think us T5 nuts are gluttons for punishement...but its so much fun figuring out the puzzle.

Has anyone had experience with this type of four bulb combination:

UVL Super Actinic
ATI Blue Plus
UVL 75/25
UVL AquaSun

^Would this be a good choice for growth as well as pop-ed colors while maintaining a blue look?

Is there a similar ATI version of the AquaSun?

I'm still debating which four bulbs I'm going to upgrade my Sundial fixture to. This is for my LPS/SPS 29 gallon that is 18" high.

I called Gary at ReefGeek.com and he suggested I go with:

Blue Plus
75/25
Blue Plus
AquaSun

Here is my list of priorities:

Most Important: The look (has to have a blueish hue to it but not overwhelming blue)

Second Important: Growth for LPS SPS

Also important: 1 order :D Don't have the time or money to experiment myself.

What do you guys think?

Hey Chipie, I would make strong use of G-mann's Actinic+, which is their version of the Blue+, along with G-mann's Aquablue+, their version of the Aquablue Special. For some actinic effect and a little help with the reds, a UVL 75/25 would fit nicely as well. If you really want color pop and actinic effect, replace the 75/25 with a Super Actinic (which is what I would do).

Something like this:

Actinic+
Aquablue+
UVL 75/25
Actinic+
Aquablue+
Actinic +

If you wanted something a little less white, and more blue and with a little more emphasis on great colors:

Actinic+
UVL 75/25
Actinic+
G-mann Aquablue+ (or Midday)
UVL Super Actinic
Actinic+

Excellent thanks a lot Todd :)

reefgeek has them, might try calling aquariumspeciatly as they carry the powermodule, they may be gettting them. you'd have to call reefgeek as well, as at last check they were not the website.
