The Volcano Tank - Konolua

I love the idea of the terrestrial crabs! I have seen hundreds of freshwater turtle tanks with fish in the water and land environment for the turtle...it now only seems logical that the next step would be to repeat that with saltwater!

It's awesome that you made that leap without any real precedence to follow, and did a wonderful job I may add.

Thanks for sharing!

This is amazing! I have a rimless cube next to my main tank that was only used as a home for two anemones and a pair of picasso clowns, once I move I think I'll try to do something like this because it would be perfect!

Tried to take some different shots. Paid a little love to the left side and did some top down shots which are kinda neat.

I was telling everyone that the crabs eat the hermits and snails, so I decided to not remove any shells for a month to see what happens......

Keep the pics coming!

Is that a glass cages coral tank? How deep is the tank?

It is from Glasscages.com which apparently gets a bad rap, but I have been satsified with many tanks from them....

It is a foot deep. I custom ordered it though, so it is not an off-the-shelf tank. Of course, I did a custom overflow and holes as well.

the shallowness makes this tank like a real tide pool...

did you move the snail shells to the graveyard or did the crab have ocd

The crabS (plural) have ocd. They always carrying them there when done. Not to the specific spot, but along the back there. There seems to be a clear attempt to not have the shells near them or where they hangout.

The main hangout is in the Volcano on top of the eggcrate that is there. I would have expected to see the shells there.

It was interesting. They all do it.

Very interesting tank! Pretty and unique! I love the shore crabs... Wish I could just go to the beach and grab some of the crabs, but then I would have to set up a cold water tank, and that is just a whole new can of worms. Anyways, kudos! Love the pics.

this is an amazing tank, How in the world did you come up with this idea ?

About 10 years ago, I was really into crabs. I was a new guy in the fish industry and got a job at a fish store. Learned a lot and seemed to have a knack for it. I very quickly became bored with corals, and liked the life AROUND the corals so much more. Shrimp, lobsters, mantis shrimps, and of course, crabs. I had attempted something like this back then with freshwater and driftwood sticking out. Was fine, but not much activity. I then attempted "this" with saltwater but the rock exposed dried out, smelled and no crabs or anything would go up there. I even put one hermit up there, it's shell stuck, and it cooked in one day. BOO! I stunk!

Well, in the summer, I became bored with my reef tank at the time (I tossed some shots below just for reference...) and thought what is the only thing more exciting to me than a reef tank, and I remembered my long failed idea.

Well, planned it, used common sense and experience, and got this going!!

Like that LOOOONG answer?!

(just posting my previous reef tank for fun....)

Here was my tang pair in the previous tank. The purple tang stayed healthy when he left for the 3 months, but the sailfin got skinny, and was way under fed. He is finally starting to return to form now back in the Volcano Tank. See how pretty he was? (I never should have given him to that LFS)

Oh, FYI, all of the rock that made the "Volcano" was previously in this tank. You can see the star polyps in the upper right....that is the front rock of the volcano, where you can see the purple out of water. Just thought that may interest anyone!

I understand what you are saying in regards to the life 'around' the corals. I get just as much satisfaction of watching groups of fish swim through fully spread out staghorns and shrimp hanging out upside down on plating cap's as I do from the corals they provide. Your old tank was very nice too, beautiful color arrangment :)
