The Volcano Tank - Konolua

It is from Glasscages.com which apparently gets a bad rap, but I have been satsified with many tanks from them....

It is a foot deep. I custom ordered it though, so it is not an off-the-shelf tank. Of course, I did a custom overflow and holes as well.

I also have a glasscages rimless, which I'm guessing is very similar in construction to yours, except mine is a little more "conventional.":lolspin: I guess I'm happy with mine. There are things I like and things I don't like about it. They put the overflow in the wrong place, for one.

You mentioned in a recent post that when you attempted a tank like this before, the rocks dried out and became smelly. Is there ever a noticeable smell from the current setup?

No, as this time I used dry lace rock for the exposed part and anything wet is always wet. So, it became live where it could, and stayed dry where it was. Last time I did liverock sticking out of the water with no waterfall....big difference.

Here is the inside of the Volcano, with the egg crate removed (well, part of the egg crate..I have it in two sections).

Hey Konolua,

Awesome tank man, I love it. Have you thought about putting a red led light on top of the volcano to make it look like lava it flowing out. Just an idea that all. P.S. i might have to steal your idea on my next project. :) Thank you for sharing and keep us posted.

BigMike.

Your tank is the most inspirational tank ive ever seen.... your tank proves less is more...its simply beautiful and you have the perfect balance. it seems practical and not overdone with millions of dollars of gear and rare corals as some have. you inspired me for my next tank for sure, jazzmanb

All I can say is...WoW! This is truly unique and inspirational. Makes me want to ditch all 4 of my tanks. I keep going back to watch the videos. keep the updates coming please. having 3 sets of clowns is really cool!!!

Wow this is the best tank I have ever seen! Keep the updates and pics coming. I love the way you take the pictures, your aquarium photography is just as unique as the tank.

That bit about the crabs carrying the shells to the shell graveyard is fascinating to me for some reason. It makes perfect sense for a person to carry their trash to a trash bin, I guess even crabs feel the need to take the trash out.

Very motivating!
Ive been out of the hobby for a bit, and couldent decide on what type of setup to start back up with as ive had them all in the past.
But your tank for sure has got me focased and excited to get back in the game, great job!

I've read and re-read this thread and like all the others, think your concept and execution is phenomenal! Obvious impecable thought and care is going into this project. Surely something for us to emmulate even if we don't have friggin Volcanos (hehe).

I was curious, what are your water parameters? Do you see anything "different" from a higher oxygen content from the free flowing water on the rock? Also, how hot do the rocks get?

Lastly, I'm shocked you got a pass from the tang police:-) A couple of mentions earlier but they've stayed off your back (deservedly so). You obviously know what your doing and your livestock looks perfect. Personally, glad to see you bend that paradigm a little!

TY

this is definitely the coolest reef tank Ive seen. So creative and unique. How do the crabs react when people come into the room? Do they scurry back into the water or have they gotten used to the presence of people in the room?
