thebanker's Fluval Edge Reef

I have ordered two of "MR11 Cool White 10 SMD 5050" LED bulbs. They appear to be the same construction as the ones I'm running now, but ideally will be a cooler color temp.

Since color temp is subjective, I'm hoping that these are the right color. If they are, I will be paying forward the LED's I have now (from SkullV) to another Fluval Edge owner.

I got the new LED's. They are indeed a cooler white than the other ones, but not *quite* as bright. Almost though. I do like the color they throw off, but the tank looks just a tad darker. I'm going to run them for a week and see how things look. The packaging said 6000k, which doesn't exactly translate to the Kelvin ratings we use in the reef hobby. I would call it a 11000k - look.

ok here we go.

Old LED on the left (natural white), new LED on the right (cool white)

The old "paper" test, you can clearly see the difference

What the camera thinks the color looks like. It looks more yellow in real life.

the camera seems to think it looks like a good color temp. i like the tank! it would be cool to have a tank at work, but somehow i don't think my boss would like it too much. a cleaner shrimp would set that thing off nicely.

love the tags lol

it's looking good, looks like you also went with a 20 watt coralife bulb, I tried 2 of those for a while as well about a year ago on my edge worked for a while

Thanks guys. I'm still not sure if I like the change - I'm telling you, the camera makes it seem more of a cool white, with noticeable blue. Real life? Not so much, and it's definitely less bright (look at the paper test for perspective).

The coralife 20w bulb is good for sunrise/sunset but during the LED cycle it is barely noticeable.

I think I'm gooing back to SkullV's natural white LED's. The new ones just aren't as bright, and not blue enough to convince me to keep them. That said, the lights are still good, and if another Fluval Edge owner wants them, let me know :).

I do want to try a new fixture that might make sense, the Wavepoint micro-sun LED.

My father has one of these in natural white over his picotope, and they also make one that is ~20k looking. The brightness is exceptional. The fixture might require some modifications to fit in the hood, and at $40 it may be well worth it.

Swapped the LED lights back to the old ones. I like the look better, even though it is more of a 10k color, the LED's are noticeably brighter in "natural white"

Oh well, lesson learned: not all MR11's are made equal.

I want to drill the bottom of mine too. How did you do this? I assumed the tanks were tempered or too thin.

I drilled the back of my fluval edge to allow for a 2.5g sump, with an aquaticlife nano skimmer on it. Works much bettr than the cruddy HOB filter that came with the tank 2 years ago.

Have you researched Cree LEDs for your lighting yet? This is the route I'm taking but just am waiting for the heat sink to arrive before I wire mine up on my edge. I hear 8 3 watt cree LEDs will support almost any coral but went with 6 Royal Blue and 6 White XML Crees I also have 2 Violet and 1 Red 3 watt non cree for some extra color pop. Probably a bit overkill but that's why I purchased a driver I can dim down if needed.
